Swap you nice Shell Blood 4 Oil 4 Banksy?, by numusic on Jul 29, 2007 13:23:12 GMT 1, Started at 58 mate, well i was 16th on the list and got print number 74 so im presuming there were only 67 for sale, wonder where the rest went.
First 50 of large runs ca 1000 (flags etc) are usually kept back to use as a form of currency for favours etc. Smaller runs, usually 10-20. Maybe Frankie's got em stored for a rainy day

Swap you nice Shell Blood 4 Oil 4 Banksy?, by bobbymeachamjr on Jul 29, 2007 19:59:12 GMT 1, no disrespect to the artist but the shell image is not original at all - seriously, look at any real political 'zine with a left leaning agenda and you have hundreds of much more hard hitting imagery with fresh concepts and from people who are pretty much anonymous. Corporate logo with blood dripping from it? come on, its like the first day of "creating political art 101" class.

Swap you nice Shell Blood 4 Oil 4 Banksy?, by bobbymeachamjr on Jul 29, 2007 20:25:24 GMT 1, Pez yeah I guess its some kind of small twist from the super cliche. But then again corporate logo/money is not that original? I just don't understand the frenzy as if it was some kind of "wow thats so creative" type of piece to justify the prices its commanding. I guess association to the street scene in any capacity drives people crazy. It is very trendy to be "mainstream political" right now. Yeah the war was a disaster. Yeah the oil companies are raping us. I'd like to see these artists touch on s*hit thats real controversial - like the raping thats going on in palestine. Banksy did and I think its his greatest accomplishment...

This is exactly the issue I see with the street scene "political art". That is, people putting a certain "value" and treating it as some kind of "investment" vehicle. Big contradiction. I gave my opinions on the shell piece. How many people are buying it for the the message? Im not going to lie and say I dont buy stuff that I can see increasing in value down the line. Its the nature of the beast and sometimes I get very conflicted myself...

Swap you nice Shell Blood 4 Oil 4 Banksy?, by tomhills1 on Jul 29, 2007 23:11:12 GMT 1, i think bobby has articulated his point superbly. i don't want to criticise chris' work too much as i know what a nice bloke he is, which is kind of an insult to him already. i think the image in question makes it's point superbly, yet in years to come may seem somewhat lightweight, just my opinion.
there is much to be said about a hard hitting image that reflects a campiagn, as a work of art i think it has to have more legs, something that still stands up in twenty years time. that is the basis on which i make most purchase decisions, hardly a science, just a matter of opinion but one i think makes sense.
debate is always healthy but i'd love more people to be like bobby and say why they think 'yes, because........' or 'no, because..........', you know, just back themselves up or at least qualify what they're saying.
always two sides too .
