It is not silly money to those buying them up... Galleries mainly. Low editions...just asking for it really It is stupid money. Nice print but not £3.5K nice, anyone paying that is just buying into the hype. For that money you can buy some sweet originals but some great artists. Not so sure it is personal buyers buying into hype, its businesses and investors

Not so sure it is personal buyers buying into hype, its businesses and investors i think you might be right and the worry for the small man is that these t**ts can manipulate the market to suit their own ends far easier than we can. don't be fooled is all i'd say.........

Not so sure it is personal buyers buying into hype, its businesses and investors £450 for one is a good investment - £3.5K isn't. Sorry, in the long term it is. Look at warhol stuff. Serious collectors do not buy from ebay, they pay a premium for an establishment. Look at art republic for instance. The galleries do the dirty and pass them on for a premium of 2-3k. Not bad for a days work You will be surprised at how many 'individuals' on here are actually galleries. Something tells me that £4k one was for a start.. Why the rush...

indeed. ask that same question in 30 years. What do you base that on? I'm not stirring, just curious as to why you think that? when was the last person to be collected like this and to be collected by serious investors? or even this sought after... thats why. It is not a fad, its been a pretty long fad if it is.

IMHO Banksy gets the public, by and large - and the public get Banksy. it really is that black and white for me, forget the art markets etc Banksy has the will of the people on his side and manipulation aside there will always be demand for a piece of him.

I would tend to agree Freerange, but for him to become the next Warhol, he will need to be collected by others than the likes of me and you (no offense), in other words, the big boys (collectors, galleries, museums etc) will need to start buying into Banksy. That hasn't happened yet, so why should they in the future?

Galleries were not interested when warhol was doing his stuff, galleries are sniffing about right now with banksy. where does it go from here? what other artists at the moment get paid a (debatable) £1m for a commission?

Cheers CFW, a good read, although I'm not sure a scandal such as this would have the impact of ruining his career... Good to have a sensible mini-debate FR and CFW re. Banksy v Warhol. I take what you say but the simple fact is that the big boys do not share that opinion, as if they did, we wouldn't still be buying signed prints for £2k, plus we wouldn't be seeing originals not selling at auction, as we have in the past year. I do agree that out of all the artists from this scene, Banksy is the one who has the potential to make it in the long term, but there is some way to go before it is goes from a possibility to a certainly, as you two are suggesting

Oh please, can we stop talking about the value of cyw now? For those that have got one, fantastic, chuffed for you, but unless you plan to sell it, it doesnt matter. For those that want to buy one, just wait a while, prices will settle (or if you thionk they wont, buy now). But the scrutiny is now getting rediculous imo. Good luck everyone, and happy new year. c
