A new test piece I am working on! Comments appreciated! What's the point of this image? If she's your daughter, then I can understand there may be personal attachment. However, for the rest of us, it's just boring. More Cliff Richard than Sex Pistols.

My comment on the piece is that technically it looks very sharp. Nice.

Good cutting pistol mate, the image is well sharp. Good job. Aside from congratulating pistol for having read the instructions on how to use his stanley blade and cans of spraypaint, do you actually find the image interesting? It feels like you're pussyfooting around the issue. That may give him false hope and encouragement, but it won't help him improve. Is this your daughter, pistol? If not, then I remain baffled.

Alot of art has no meaning but looks nice. Do I find it interesting? Not particularly. However, I do give praise where due and Pistol deserves it for his technique.
Did I give Pistol false hope? No. Encouragement? Yes. That, in my opinion is a good thing about this forum.
I do get your point Pristine and I find alot of artwork is without meaning but it can still be nice.
IMO.

meaning in art is an age old debate! different views can give different and even contradicting opinions! even if this is taken straight from a magazine there will/can still be a myriad of reasons for this choice, giving value to the producer or a viewer who delves deeper. The stuckist view is that meaning is pointless and that it is only the pleasure of creating work that gives it value! In some cases style or technical ability alone can give value to work. Compare Banksy with c215.Banksys work is filled with accessible meaning that we can all immediately be amused by and relate to. c215 is distinctively more within the realm of portraiture and style, but both a pleasure to engage with. With a lot of modern work the 'meaning' can outweigh the physical production of a piece, so much so that only the idea may exist! i say thumbs up for making something.play around!see which route you find most satisfactory. pristine i feel you were a little harsh with your criticism we are on the new artist thread! peace

Pistol, nice piece. Technically well executed and really like the use of what looks like a garden gate to spray the image on. It does not matter who the girl is just that the image was interesting enough for you to want to paint it, lets face it plenty of artists have, are and will continue to do portraits of women. Personally, I don't do this to please others, just myself. If others like it, great, if they don't, well its their loss. Art will always spark debate, so keep it up and like the others have suggested, play around, you never know where it might lead.

Thanks for all your comments guys. The piece is entitled 'Seven'........it is a picture of my daughter. One day she came down from her bedroom and had (with the help of her older sister) applied lipstick, eye shadow mascara etc. I thought it was fascinating that a girl of Seven can look so beautiful and grown up but still have that lovely look of innocence and naivety in her eyes. So many years ahead of her and so much to learn. A lovely age to be..........'Seven' I will post the finished result soon!

I hope you don't take my criticism of the piece personally. The intention wasn't malicious or to discourage, but to provide honest and frank feedback.

Looking very good, probably the best technically i've seen from you so far! Like the way the bottom fades out too, i was thinking of doing that myself on something i've got in mind!
Just an idea, but have you thought of adding a bit of colour? If you were talking about how she turned up with makeup on you could add lipstick etc to make it a bit more obvious. And if you kept the rest of the image monotone it might be quite effective!

Looks great pistol, dont listen to this "Whats the meaning B0**locks?" C215 does portraits of people and he happens to be one of my favourite artists. Sometimes the execution is good enough. I have both of C215 Nina prints, does it mean anything personally to me, no! It's just a cute image that looks nice on my wall which makes me smile and i think has been done very well. There is too much Sh*t out there at the moment IMO, people trying to give a quirky message "Banksy Style" hopping on the back of cliche'ed bandwagons trying to be thought provoking. IMO it comes across forced or tacky most of the time. Whats wrong with just a nicely done image for the individual to make their own mind up about or make there own conclusions for what it's about, (maybe just to them personally). You have done a great job, keep it up!

Thanks fellas. Your views and help are really appreciated. I sneaked out last night with a bit of mischief in mind and now 'Seven' is up on the street in my home town. Unfortunately I forgot my camera so will go back this evening and get a pic. as long as it hasn't been buffed already!
