Keeping your head above water, by Agent Provocateur on Mar 4, 2009 17:23:49 GMT 1, Quality doc, one of your best pieces imo... the face looks a bit more sculptural than your normal style? Aren't the forms and lines usually a bit more abstract?
Really liking the mixture of paint, defined spraying and the dribbles
I'll mention one thing tho, when looking at it I'm drawn to the right eyebrow (the subjects left), just wondering what it would look like if they were both like the left?

Keeping your head above water, by Danny O'Connor on Mar 4, 2009 18:03:19 GMT 1, Cheers mate. I guess this is quite sculptural. I tend to use a mixture of sweeping flowing and dynamic sharp lines. This one is quite heavy on the sharp lines so it is probably responsible for the more sculptured appearance.
I sometimes look to sculpture for inspiration actually. I also really like the sculptural type painting Picasso did and Tamara de Lempicka did some pretty smart stuff too (if a little camp)
As for the eye, the painting is made to flow up in that area but I guess that may be a bit distracting. I think a bit of shading to hint at the eyelid may help. Thanks for your input mate!

Fav yet though. Proper purpose. How come paintings take you a day and me a week.
Keep it up dude!

Didn't mean to dis the piece with the eyebrow comment, think it looks fantastic.
Is it appearing in a show or anything?

Keeping your head above water, by Danny O'Connor on Mar 4, 2009 19:31:56 GMT 1, Not a dis at all mate, that's one of the reasons to post pics in my opinion, at times you can get so immersed in the piece you can't always see the wood for the trees.
No plans to put this in a show at the moment but U never know.

That's because you spend half your time making cups of tea or phoning people to go to the pub rather than painting ;D
Quick beer Friday?

Keeping your head above water, by Heavyconsumer on Mar 5, 2009 21:41:36 GMT 1, This one's a belter Danny! I would LOVE to have this piece on our wall. It's one of my favourites from you yet. Your work is just getting better and better at the moment. Some of the recent additions on Edge, this and that piece Darren picked up from you have been a big step in the right direction in my limited and unenlightened opinion.
I like the concept of remaining aware of the balance of the types of lines you use in a piece and how that balance, when shifted either way, alters the outcome. I'm not an artist myself, but seeing what you produce, it's very easy to recognise that in the work recently (the employment of sharper, more angular lines) and I think it's having a great impact on your paintings.

Couldn't have said it much better myself. Seriously great work Doc and I like your choice of using re-claimed wood.

Thanks for the great comments everyone. I love painting on found wood it's my favourite surface at the moment (plus its free) My old man works in a ship yard and he nicks it for me from there ;D
The idea of keeping your head above water pretty much represents where most of us are at, at the moment (me included ) But Ricobenfico I love it when people find there own message in something. I vaguely remember a John Lennon interview with him saying he often wrote songs and didn't actually get something from it till he listened to it a few times, probably to do with the sub concious at work during the creative process.
Right that's enough Bull Sh!t from me for one day Thanks again for the comments, I do feel like I'm turning a corner with my work at the moment and hopefully I can push on for the rest of 09.
