BANKSY - LA Premier "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by mar on Apr 13, 2010 22:01:23 GMT 1, The premiere was great, way to hung over to give a real review, or post pics. The film was good. Real funny. Artists will enjoy seeing just how little MBW did to put on his debut show. Its almost amazing how little of the art he actually does himself, and then the gallery install, well lets just say he didn't do much of that either.
I was amazed it took Mr. 'Brainwashed' 10 hours to put up a pretty large 3 panel paste up. Covering an Obey piece he filmed Shep put up, months before, in the process. I could've hand painted the same thing in that amount of time.
RPM is right in a sense, there is some sense of bullying by the real masters. But its only fair considering the heist MBW pulled on them.
The thing that I left feeling was that of ALL the amazing footage Thierry captured of Andre, Banksy, Buffmonster, c215, Invader, Shep, Swoon etc. and we only see bits and pieces of it. Where did all this footage go, b/c that's really what I left wanting to see more of. The ninja climbing missions, and the cop run ins. All said and done, the film is worth a watch, regardless of your opinion of the artists involved.

BANKSY - LA Premier "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by bigtlt on Apr 13, 2010 22:50:54 GMT 1, interview with banksy - taken from wired.com
Wired.com - After watching Exit Through the Gift Shop, I still couldnโt figure out if Guetta, the director-turned-artist, is for real. He doesnโt seem to know anything about art, yet you allowed him to make a film โ and then he turned the tables on you. What do you think about him now?
Banksy: As far as Iโm aware, Mr. Brainwash doesnโt know very much about art, especially his own. He seems to mainly judge the success of an art show by how many square feet it covers and whether it makes any money. This probably makes him the ultimate artist of our times.
Wired.com: You keep your identity secret โ ostensibly because of your methods. Your appearance in the film suggests you will at some point unmask yourself. Is this documentary a small part of some greater burlesque theater, with your identity as the ultimate reveal?
Banksy: The film is the end of my public life rather than the beginning. This is the most youโll ever see of me, if I can help it.
Wired.com: Your work explores power, tests power and is therefore revolutionary, encouraging people to subvert the powers that be. Mr. Brainwash kind of did this to you. He looked at the power structure around him (you and Fairey) and exploited it for his own ends. Does that make him a student โ or a con man?
Banksy: Thierry essentially trespassed into the art business, and even in the wild world of vandalism thereโs a lot of conservatism โ people donโt like to see the rules being broken. The story of Mr. Brainwash should be inspirational, and in the hands of a more cheerful director it probably wouldโve been. The film might come across as a bit cynical, but itโs important not to forget these are revolutionary times in art.
Thereโs a whole new audience out there, and itโs never been easier to sell it, particularly at the lower levels. You donโt have to go to college, drag โround a portfolio, mail off transparencies to snooty galleries or sleep with someone powerful. All you need now is a few ideas and a broadband connection. This is the first time the essentially bourgeois world of art has belonged to the people. We need to make it count.

BANKSY - LA Premier "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by Happy Shopper on Apr 13, 2010 23:04:09 GMT 1, I'm quite surprised by the numbers of celebrities invited to the premier, but then again perhaps it was part of the joke/message of the film. I wonder how many of them had bought MBW art at his show!?

BANKSY - LA Premier "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by rkitek on Apr 14, 2010 0:36:54 GMT 1, In response to your question Silky, I suspect that for many of them that their publicists heard about it, thought their client should go and made it happen. That seems to be the norm around LA.

I can tell you exactly how that happen... Great PR! I can guarantee you that there was a handful of people that got paid (very well) to take are of invitations and book celebs. I know one person that helped do this for the LA premier. Same applies to doing any kind of an event... invite the people that matter and they will show up and maybe/probably spend some money.

I suspect you are right about the publicist part. However, it is also possible that many could actually be <shock> fans of Banksy. I know that Pete Wentz is a big fan of the current art movement in L.A. and has been seen at many show openings. Same for Adrien Brody. As far as Joe Hanh goes, his collection has been documented by The Hundreds and is pretty amazing.
The point is, just because someone is "famous" doesn't mean that they might not genuinely like art and/or Banksy. Granted it is possible that they are jumping on the bandwagon because its perceived as cool or a good investment, but then again I suspect there are many on this forum and elsewhere who are not "famous" that would still fall under that category.

BANKSY - LA Premier "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by Happy Shopper on Apr 14, 2010 10:02:48 GMT 1, I thought that "Lower levels" comment was quite funny. It's so easy to call yourself an artist, make some prints, promote yourself here (and other forums), and sell them... maybe! There's some pretty good artists in the scene, but I doubt many of them would be selling anything if it wasn't for hype of some kind. Very few stand up on their own IMO.

BANKSY - LA Premier "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by faceman on Apr 14, 2010 18:24:21 GMT 1, Hi all, I've been a longtime fan of Banksy but just recently got on this forum. I have a few photos to share from the premier. I didn't attend, just crashed it so to speak. I also have some photos of the 2 pieces that popped up in Los Angeles leading up to the premier. However when I post them I get the photobucket message that they've been moved or deleted. So here is a link to flickr. www.flickr.com/photos/49298171@N04/sets/72157623854067348/
