Os Gemeos - Milan - January 2010, by sand on Jan 7, 2010 15:29:56 GMT 1, PRESS RELEASE
After the enormous success in 2007, Galleria Patricia Armocida is proud to announce the return of OS GEMEOS for their second solo exhibition at the Milan gallery, which opens on Monday January 25, 2010 at 6:30PM.
Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo (1974, Sรฃo Paulo, Brazil), identical twins better known as Os Gemeos, were pioneers of Brazilian writing in the mid 80s. Aside from the incredible works theyโve created in the streets of Sรฃo Paulo, in recent years theyโve also been invited to show their creations in museums and in some of the most important art expos worldwide. For this exhibit, entitled Nos braรงos de um anjo (In the arms of an angel), they will present never-before-seen works: large canvases, musical sculpture-objects, mechanical and interactive site-specific installations which will be created in the gallery itself.
The exhibit includes works that reflect their imagination which is influenced by daily experiences in the urban outskirts of a huge metropolis rich in contrast, and by cultural and musical folklore of the northeastern part of the country, which have been translated by the sensitive eyes of the artists into poetic visions with surreal and dreamlike atmospheres. Os Gemeosโ distinctive characters, recognizable by their yellow skin and garish clothing embellished with gems and sequins, create delicate portraits of musicians, fishermen, women, and children who populate simple and sensual scenes of Brazilian reality that are melded with imaginary figures conceived in their oneiric universe. The precision of their lines, the delightful details in background landscapes or in the texture of the clothing, generate a sense of amazement and lead us to magical and fairytale-esque places imbued with a subtle and at times melancholic sense of lyricism which touches the soul.
Hailing from the street culture of Sรฃo Paulo, Os Gemeosโ works gained international recognition and have been exhibited in prestigious cultural events, such as the Bienal de Sรฃo Paulo in 2001, Cubaโs Havana Biennial in 2006, and in museums worldwide such as: Vertigo, Brazilian Art Museum (MAB-FAAP), Sรฃo Paulo, Brazil, 2009; Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2009; When Lives Become Form: Creative Power from Brazil, Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan, 2009; Museu Oscar Niemeyer, Curitiba, Brazil, 2008; Street Art, Tate Modern, London, UK, 2008; Salon National Des Beaux-Arts, Carrousel du Louvre, Paris, France, 2008; As Flores deste Jardim meus Avรณs Plantaram, Museum Het Domein Sittard, Sittard, Netherlands; 2007. Some recent solo exhibitions: Too Far Too Close, Deitch Project Gallery, New York, USA, 2008; Sonhei que tinha sonhando, Galeria Pilar Parra e Romero, Madrid, Spain, 2008; Assum Preto, Galleria Patricia Armocida, Milan, Italy, 2007; O peixe que comia estrelas cadentes, Galeria Fortes Vilaรงa, Sรฃo Paulo, Brazil; 2006.

Would love to go. How much does an original start at? (probably too much...)

Os Gemeos - Milan - January 2010, by speebe on Jan 7, 2010 21:03:19 GMT 1, The guys and girls at Galleria Patricia Armocida, published that lovely book with the stitched cover at the last show.
Can I ask any members going to pick up a copy of the Os Gemeos Catalogue/book... assuming there is one at this show too?
Failing that another copy of the the old Catalogue wouldn't go a miss if there are any left? I could keep a version for reference in mystudio at work too.
Any help will be greatly appreciated and rewarded in kind + any costs too of course!

Os Gemeos - Milan - January 2010, by Nico on Jan 7, 2010 21:34:44 GMT 1, Hey guys and gals...I emailed Patricia at the gallery and here's her reply:
Dear Nicholas, I have not any Os Gemeos print available. The only existing screenprint by os gemeos is included ( but not separated)in the catalogue that I made in occasion of theyr solo show at my gallery in 2007. The price and work list is not yet available because a lot of works will be created in my gallery by the twins when they will be here. So we have to be patient I'll send you the works and price list as soon as it will be complete. Kind regards
Patricia Armocida

Os Gemeos - Milan - January 2010, by gozgoz on Jan 8, 2010 10:27:52 GMT 1, Is there anything vaguely exciting I should be doing in Milan? I will be flying in the early morning flight and getting out late at night. So i figure i'll have a couple of hours on my hands not including picking up manty's armani coats and bulgari diamonds.

Os Gemeos - Milan - January 2010, by gozgoz on Jan 25, 2010 19:59:56 GMT 1, On way back to the airport now...I just went for it. I've no idea who any of the banksy forum members are and no one came up to say hi so I must either look terrifying or smell bad?
It was amazing. Simply amazing. I can't say they broke any new grounds but who cares, yellow people in fantastical dreamlike scenarios are what they do best and by god did they do it well... A lot of sequins were used this time as well on certain pieces. I didn't ask for the prices but I know a piece on a 1m tall wood went for 38k euros so I shudder to think what the 2m large canvases go for. They really must be seen in the flesh to be appreciated... One piece of this boy(?) standing on a little commuter train - not sure if anyone else thought this but it was almost three dimensional I had to go close to make sure that there was nothing sticking out. Insane....
The twins and their brother also came down later, I bumped into them as I was rushing to the train station and only managed to say a quik hi as I had a plane to catch...
There's a book inside of os gemeos printed by deutshce bank as well - gezus... They really are playing with the big boys now huh?
If anyone goes down, I recommend eating at the tratorria milanese at santa marta - best risotto e ossobucco ever!
No prints or anything affordable (well to me at least) for sale as far as I know?

Manty - sorry I failed u but I'm about 165m tall and they wouldn't let me on the train with a canvas that size and those bureaucratic italians won't let me train surf. Damn those italian train officials huh?

Os Gemeos - Milan - January 2010, by gozgoz on Jan 25, 2010 21:54:33 GMT 1, Dang! So u weren't there at all?! There I was smiling at anyone and everyone I imagined a 'volvic' would look like. No wonder pple looked at me weird.
There were no vast huge installations this time round. Altho there is a small room with wood pieces on the wall and on one door/wall there was something which really caught my eye..... And probably the first non yellow / black and white painting I've seen of theirs - a really really poignant almost oil like painting of a vast vast angry ocean taking up half the wall... And a very very small palm sized osgemeos character climbing down (or up?) a ladder disappearing into the clouds looking down with anticipation and anxiety.... It was beautiful... I guess it really stood out because it was so different.
Its not a huge show like the one in sao paolo. Its a tiny show but very intimate and sweet.
