I know the Daily Mail had a piece a few years back exposing Banksy but given his popularity and the fact his stock is rising I am surprised that there had not been a more recent piece (News of the World or documentary team)
My question here is, Do you think Banksy will ever be FULLY exposed? Is so, will it be voluntary.
PS, Yes, I am aware of the NY Times piece as well.

Interesting post .. hadn't thought of it from that angle - don't suppose it would be that hard for them to get his identity from somebody but not sure what they would really gain as they would never get an interview etc...although i can see it happening with all the recent publicity. have you got a link for the ny times piece please ?

As he has been 'exposed' in about a dozen different guises I am guessin that anyone who claims they have a photo of Banksy will never be believed 100%
Guessin if he appeared together with Laz and came out of the closet 'so to speak' or was arrested and publicized I am thinking that we will never know who the true Banksy is!!

I was forwarded a link to pics of him doing stencils in Jamaica from a couple of years back which i think are the ones you refer to BONGO... says in the blog that he was a bit of a big-shot saying no to pics till a load of locals started and he decided he didn't want to risk upsetting them so let them carry on... at the end it says on there they got a warning from him not to publish the pics but they said f*** you and published them regardless.
I don't know the people involved but also wonder what difference it makes if you know what the dude looks like.
Article also has a go at him for accepting money from Puma to do a commission when he states in interviews that he won't take Nike's money as they (allegedly) use child labour forces to make their shoes, which of course Puma don't... !

Wasn't there a photo of (allegedly) him doing that wallflower piece in London a while ago? I think it was taken by a passer-by with a phone without him really copping on... When I first saw it (sorry, I can't find the pic anywhere) I kind of thought the guy doing the flower looked like he was a relation of the character on the Barely Legal show posters and wondered if the poster was some sort of distorted self-portrait. That said, I bet if I saw both pictures side-by-side they'd look nothing like each other as I've never compared them as such, just a kind of gut feeling I had.  |

His name is common knowledge! It was printed freely through lit in Bristol around 2000 and even was interviewed as such and not Banksy when he lived in South London and was bombing the s**t out of the city! Think Cartrain but harder!. Its far cooler not to know who he is...I always thought of him as a Dr Gonzo: 'There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.' Far superior than a tubby Jimmy Nail! Oi Oi

If Banksy is still fully anonymous to the auction houses etc then how does he get paid his 4% AR fees from the sale of all his work? And if he doesn't get it then who does?

Without doubt he has a sterling team of lawyers behind him...
I remember reading about a website that posted pictures of him only to receive threatening letters from lawyers telling them to take them straight down. The well known pages that posted the jamaica photos have all been shut down or no longer show them (as far as i can see). I don't doubt that certain people in the press know who he is but for some reason it hasnt been put out there.
Regardless...the myth is always greater than the reality and with any luck we'll hopefully never find out. I have alot of respect for someone of his status who shuns the media limelight

I saw that website that put the Jamaica photos up and then had threatening letters too, can't remember which one it was though. You're right the myth is greater than the reality, it means that he can do whatever he wants in his private life while carefully controlling his image in the media, we only know what he wants us to know and then we can make up the rest depending on what we want him to be. |

The Jamaica pics were published by the Evening Standard which has been a huge supporter of Banksy since Turf war.
As a lawyer I cann't see any reason for taking them down after a solicitors letter unless they weren't the real deal.
Never met the guy myself but personally know lots of people who have. Someone will break ranks one day or perhaps the papers will do the dirty.
Cann't see it making a difference to the price of fish......

You may have better info than me, but I was told by a particular auction house, apropos of nothing (I have never sold a piece of art) that artists must provide their name and address to collect on the AR cash and failing that the auction house was opbliged to retain the money until the artist does. |
