as with most Banksy images i'd say it's as simple or as complex as you want to make it
- a simple gag about american cops loving their donuts? - a dig at western consumer society valuing their sweet high fat food hugely? - differing colour editions to represent mccain and obama - but still they're just donuts i.e. all politicians are the same
I cannot believe some of the theory's that have surfaced about this image, it has to be IMO one his most straight forward pieces, sure, it has the side dig at cops loving donuts, but surely its the theme Politicians/leaders are Donuts, probably fist sketched when the Great Bush was running around.
Someone tell me why is this so difficult to clock?

This was my idea posted a while back.
"IMO its a bit more simple the cops look like a motorcade protecting the president. Although the doughnut can be different flavors and "colours" those are just on the outside and regardless of that in the inside still basically a doughnut. It doesn't necessarily have to be the US but considering the recent election and the available flavors seems a bit suspicious "
I think it´s a great image and if by a miracle I manage to win one in the lottery...I will happily hang it on my wall.
In terms of a Banksy image having to have a deep political and significant meaning...I don´t agree. This is classic Banksy humour and executed perfectly. It makes me smile every time I look at it and I guess that´s the most important thing.
Or if you´re looking for a deeper message...how about the idea it´s about the police having misplaced priorities and instead of doing basic policing they waste their time on trivial matters such as spending hour after hour completing red tape [or in this case protecting their own interests...symbolised by the doughnut].
Or if you want to go even deeper...what does the doughnut represent? How about the American dream? From the outside it´s sugar coated and alluring. But somewhat flawed with a massive hole in it and needs to be protected from attack [perhaps foreign].
I like the fact that you can read into the image as much as you want...rather than having the message rammed home..
I hope all the people who don´t like the image won´t be entering the lottery...but I doubt that.
Fingers crossed i´ll finally get lucky....but I also doubt that!
Best of luck to everyone...hopefully a lot of forum members will end up with one.
"i think everyone is underestimating the depth of this image ..
some may say that it represents a 'tired' stereotype of the old 'highway patrol love affair with their doughnuts' ..
i say it goes a little further :
"unexpected patterns in the cosmic microwave background – the relic radiation left behind by the Big Bang points to the fact that the universe is doughnut shaped and finite .... scientists are now convinced that the universe is finite, doughnut shaped and spinning about a central axis of quantum singularity. The quantum singularity keeps the universe stable. It is floating in the Hyperspace in the zero quantum state. Zero point energies dominate the temporal energy variations across the universe." (quote from ScienceToday)
This image by Banksy blatantly references the United States desire (and aim) to be not only in total control of our planet ( the New World order ) but to use this as a stepping stone to place themselves in the position of 'policing' the universe itself ! the US has spent alot of time and energy implanting this idea into the consciousness of our planet through the media and is most obvious when looking at films and television from yesteryear eg Star Wars, Star Trek, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon etc
The van in the image represents the closed and highly protected secret societies who work towards this New Universe Totalitarian State (ie the illuminarty, Skull and Bones, Bilderburg Group etc ) .. the outriders are representing the human 'slaves' indoctrinated to actually physically apply and enforce this order for these 'societies' ... and the universe (represented by the doughnut) is what these societies hold up and carry forward into the future , driven upon a vehicle under their control and in a direction of their choice!
We 'the people' are of course represented by the hundreds and thousands - note - not millions and billions as the current population stands , but the hundreds and thousands that 'they' wish to reduce the earth population down to, through pre-planned starvation and population control mechanisms, currently being implemented across the globe..
lastly (it may be worth mentioning) the whole universe is being carried forward upon the shoulders of the oil industry .. the petrol driven van .. the bikes.. the rubber tyres etc .. obviously a reference to the money and power and might of these industries and the fact that the ultimate owners of these industries are indeed the main players in the secret societies mentioned (and the ones unnamed in this explanation)
So , all you winners out there ... enjoy your print .. and remember to think its just about fat doughnut guzzling pigs is to do the artist a disservice."
Homer: [ruefully] I'd sell my soul for a donut. [The devil appears, looking like Flanders] Flanders: Heh heh, that can be arranged. Homer: What -- Flanders! You're the devil? Flanders: Ho ho, it's always the one you least suspect.
Flanders wants to ensure Homer means what he said.
Flanders: Many people offer to sell their souls without reflecting on the grave ramifications -- Homer: [impatiently] _Do_ you have a donut or not? Flanders: Comin' up. Just sign here. Careful, hot pen!
Flanders: Now remember, the instant you finish it, I own your soul for --
Homer: [through a full mouth] Hey, wait: if I don't finish this last bite, you don't get my soul, do you? Flanders: Well, technically, no, but -- Homer: [gloating] I'm smarter than the devil!
Flanders doesn't like Homer's gloating, and he turns into a fearsome beast, promising to see Homer in hell yet. He disappears back into the ground in a ball of flame, but Homer's not worried. "Not likely," he giggles, putting the last little piece in his shirt pocket.
That night, Homer wanders out of bed half-asleep, looking for something to eat. He opens the fridge and looks at all the leftovers, but his eyes are drawn to the little piece of donut despite all the signs warning him he's not supposed to eat it. He tosses it into his mouth. "Mmm, forbidden donut."
The minute he swallows it, the devil appears. "Well, well: finishing something?" A hole of fire appears in the kitchen floor, and Homer is drawn towards it. He grabs onto the fridge door, clinging desperately to it as the suction becomes more powerful. Marge comes in to see what the commotion is about, and her hair gets sucked towards the peephole to hell. Homer's not strong enough, and he gets drawn in.
The image has to represent POW's last stand as the offical supplier of Banksy prints. As such it is the doughnut that represents Banksy and the police escort is banksy being escorted to his last appearance as a POW stable mate. They had to use this image as it was the last one Banksy gave to them rights to back in 2007 hence the reason the image has such an old skool feel and not really what you would expect in the now from Banksy. Still the market is such that any release of a banksy regardless of how tame and not so note worthy it may be, still brings the crowds. As such POW managed still to make a nice profit from this piece. RIP POW
(All the above I made up and bares no resemblance to reality...or does it...?)
