new swoon print just released, by gbh on Jan 4, 2008 18:00:27 GMT 1, I think it's clear to all that she's been around (ages) and done good things, etc. if it isn't it should be.
all well and good but back on topic.. the image and the combinations of other factors just isn't doing it for me (most of her work doesn't, but then again neither does Faile's stuff and to round off my point further, I have previously been outed for being a fan of pure evil and STOT21stcplanb so in which direction do my tastes go? who knows?).
as long as beauty stays in the eye of the beholder, we'll all make it till next christmas (credit cards may not though).

new swoon print just released, by Francis on Jan 4, 2008 20:41:29 GMT 1, Yeah absolutely. Who cares if shes been doing street work since 1999. Some of you die hards might of heard of her prior to the last 2 years but simply hearing of a name doesn't = sensation. She is who she is now because of the recent frenzy in street art. Just like a lot of other street artists ie. Micallef Overnight sensation? You are kidding right. She has been doing street work since around 1999. Check out this NY Times article written in 2004 www.nytimes.com/2004/07/09/nyregion/09street.html?ex=1247112000&en=87b164f0ec2b3c36&ei=5090Anyway re pricing Swoon Helena's have been going for between $500 and $700 on the bay so this print is priced at market value. Given that it is a worthy cause why shouldn't justseeds sell at market value? It may take longer to sell out but they still get the money rather than a flipper.
bobbymeachamjr, what are 3 popular artists who you would classify as not being overnight sensations?

Totally agree!
I've often thought she should release her train windows as individual prints... people could then collect as many as they like and hang them in a line.
I think they'd be a lot more appealing.

new swoon print just released, by asabrush on Jan 5, 2008 13:06:52 GMT 1, Not that my knowledge of Swoon is alot,I really like this print, the charity aspect is an added bonus. The more people out there giving any percentage of profits to a worth while cause can only be a good thing. Great idea about releasing the train windows as prints

1. Van Gogh 2. Toulouse Lautrec 3. Marcel Duchamp
JK JK... but if you think about it, street art as a whole is an overnight sensation in the grand narrative of art history!

I can't work out if you're actually congratualting Swoon or taking the piss out of her considering the whole commodification of street art thang.

new swoon print just released, by darjeeling on Jan 5, 2008 23:26:43 GMT 1, This strategy is going to haunt these overnight sensation artists one day... I'm curious as to why you feel Swoon is a overnight sensation? I don't think Swoon is an overnight sensation. But I do think the way prices jump make it seem that way. I think it's a strong point that the OP made about printhouses and galleries selling prints at full or over market value. It's a strategy that can backfire. Look at Obey $30 a print. It only drives up demand and the frenzy. Same with Banksy. If Stop and Search sold for ยฃ5000 on POW there would not be the same frenzy about it as when it sells for ยฃ500 - it would be a whole different world.
As for this print, it's a nice piece but the edition is HUGE. Good cause? Sure send $10 to Salvation army and save your cash for the next print.

new swoon print just released, by Francis on Jan 5, 2008 23:50:11 GMT 1, I thought he was just taking a piss.
But, you are right, darjeeling....the primary market (for editioned prints) CAN NOT and SHOULD NOT price pieces at "market value" because "market value" is not for the ENTIRE RUN. Additionally, as you mentioned, it takes out the thrill of scoring, the excitement of buying something at a lower cost than you'd be able to later, and buzz.

No really. Regardless of the state of affairs of the genre, those of us who have been around before it was a trend don't even think of it in those terms. It is what it is, and it consumes us. Then again, it's hard to understand the outside perspective when you're inside the room...
The fact that ALL of these artist's have become L'Enfant Terribles of the artworld simply strengthen's my argument that SWOON's work should be celebrated in all contexts.
The reality is that while Street Art has lost it's hold as the last bastion of the counter-culture, SWOON has maintained her integrity AND continued to create really important Artwork. Why else do you think she is so loved by everyone who meets and works with her? It's not completely about masturbating on paper for her (like it is with so many other "street artist's" and "Graffiti Writers"); it's also about the Social Life of Things and the world around us.
Bottom line: She gets it. That's why we love her. If you don't get her work, then you don't get it, and that's too bad. But that's you're own social context, and that's cool too.
I don't compliment people unless I'm honest. I was being honest, and I'll repeat myself, I'm happy to call her my friend.

new swoon print just released, by Guest on Jan 6, 2008 0:29:39 GMT 1, Yes, I'm truly on the inside, the inside of my own head. Let's leave it at that for now.
Back on topic:
I don't know anything about that... If I did, I wouldn't perpetuate that rumour, as I know that it's baseless and false.
How is taking an image, making it into a print edition worth $120,000 and donating ALL of the profits considered "Money Grabbing". "Money Making" might be a more true and more polite way of discussing it.
The artist is using her fame and success to help others in this instance. Maybe I'm retarded, but I just can't find fault with that.

The only talk I have heard like this is on this forum. And it is just wrong.
Swoon has only done 3 commercial prints - one from BRP and 2 from paper monster all in pretty small edition sizes. Plus sales of a few originals. Against numerous prints and originals where the proceeds have gone to charitable causes. Lots of artists in this scene might be accused of being "money grabbing" but I really wouldn't include swoon in that.

new swoon print just released, by ricosg11 on Jan 7, 2008 1:58:26 GMT 1, Ill also add that Swoon is one of the only artists that has kept the price of her original work consistent over the last year and a half. Shes a 30 year old artist raising money to set up a free school. What more needs to be said?
