How about your environment and it's surroundings. This is a perfect example of globalization and no accountability. All about his surroundings and nature and man!
i just don't get Josh Keyes. can someone explain what i am missing please?.
Hello folks,
Slammer thanks for your query.
I have a number of narratives that weave through my work, environmental issues are the most obvious and pressing but that is not the only area of concern or expression that interests me. This piece, both Call I and II were intended to be read as a diptych. The call is a call of action, to call attention to the way we interact with each other and our environment. The call is also from one animal to another, I wanted to have a bear listening to something (another bear) far off in the distance. There are other layers to this work, along with the commentary and interpretation of world events there is a subtle injection of personal mythology or autobiographical content. Each piece is both a public and private expression, and some are more successful than others.
Though the depiction is a pessimistic vision of what the future holds for us I am hope full that we will start to see some changes in the way we use energy, the election of Obama is a brilliant move for the US, in terms of moving forward and rebuilding from the Bush catastrophe.
The way or style in which I work is a reinvention of the "scientific view", some folks are not too keen on the sterility of my work but that is exactly what I am calling attention to. It is a comment on the scientific and corporate perception of the world and things that live in it. Quantitative, numerical, specimens and habitats to be categorized analyzed and subjected to our consumer needs. My other interest is in the dioramas and collections found in natural history museums, so there is an element of staging nature in the service of telling a narrative.
I know my work is not every ones cup of tea, but it feels right to me. I hope this helps to clarify my ideas, if you have any other question please feel free to ask. If you have time you may wish to visit my website, I have many images and a few personal statements that might help to define my voice for you.
I didn't quite get Josh Keyes work either, there was something that didn't sit right but the more I got to see of his stuff the quicker I got hooked. As he mentioned in his post below it's that 'sterility' that I love along with the strong references to nature etc etc. I am so happy I got his latest piece even if it is a large edition.

I too never got why Josh was so popular when i first started seeing his work. I got that he was a talented painter, but it all seemed a bit to surreal for me. However now i love it, keep looking at his work and im sure after some time it will grow on you.
There are a few artists that are highlighted on here that I don't get, so I fully understand Slammer's and Topboy's comments.
Josh Keyes however, I do get. In fact there is a hell of a lot to get. It has also been great to watch his style develop. Apart from his obvious skill as a painter, I think the messages that are in his paintings will have a longevity far beyond some of the mundane pieces that are touted around here. A lot of the power in his pieces creeps up on you, rather than the trumpets and flashing lights haling the new "look at me" masterpiece.
Imo he is one of the most exciting artist around but has he say's not everyone's cup of tea.
I also 'get' Josh's work which I love. I agree he work gets better and better and it does have an important and very relevant message about man and his environment. His skill is obvious but I also love the vibrancy and humour in his work.
The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who don't have it.

Couldn't agree more, very subtle with his humour but still there, the skill in his work is amazing looks even better in the flesh( just for you Bram) ;D He also appeals to a wide range of ages, my daughter who's ten, love his work. Not because of the message but the fact that it looks very nice. I think we will see a lot more from JK this year.
