Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by Karl Read on Sept 26, 2009 21:35:42 GMT 1, Dark and depressing. Funny my wife says that about the music I listen to. At times life is like that and it is not a bad thing to have something be it art or music create that feeling of melancholy. In fact it is at times comforting or least it makes you feel alive.
couldn't agree more.

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by jones27 on Sept 28, 2009 10:42:59 GMT 1, I popped in on saturday afternoon. There were a few head pieces still available. My favourite was the head piece on the far left - the black one.
Also had a peek in the room next door. Some lovely Faile canvases, especially the agony&ecstacy remix. Also a massive original Stop & search.

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by chiefhk on Sept 28, 2009 10:56:27 GMT 1, I wonder if the show not selling out is a function of the economic environment or Micallef not as popular as before......I'd love to own a large oil on canvas/linen piece!

To me it's a sign that people actually think about what they buy and making sure they actually like the piece. Not just mindless buying because of the name, hype or something else. The pieces which are left are not too bad but compare to the rest not so good IMO. And it doesn't matter if they're ยฃ3-30K. As for selling out the show - is it really important for the whole show to be sold out? From what I have seen 80% is gone and that's pretty impressive these days, no? And I agree, I would love to own a large oil by him (provided I actually like it )

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by digitalkid on Sept 28, 2009 14:09:56 GMT 1, Gutted I missed this preview due to work, I'll be popping along ASAP..
Now I may get shot down in flames for this but a few pieces on page 5 of this thread look very Tracey Emin to me!
I prefer the darker look it just gets better and better, not all things have to be happy joy joy imo.

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by Coach on Oct 1, 2009 22:36:03 GMT 1, I visited this show this afternoon - and was blown away. The pictures really do not do the pieces justice, both in scale and power. Some of the paintings are huge. On most, the paint is thick and textured, adding to the depth and strength of the pieces. So many of the pieces are utterly stunning - I loved the two on card, one called hot girls I think - house in turmoil, so cant find the catalogue. But, in person, the two stand out pieces for me were two of the larger portraits in the first room - so moving and haunting. This has been my 2nd favorite show (Banksy beats them all ino!) of the year by some measure. I really would recommend it. c

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by trasbash on Oct 4, 2009 10:39:07 GMT 1, Went yesterday for the second time and cant help feel dissapointed. I do think there are 5-6 beautiful works but there is a huge amount of pieces that just look like they were knocked up in minues with no thought process behind them at all. IMO none of the charcoal head studies match up to those done in the past. A few (5-6) are just plain awful. Really grubby and awful. Although Micallef has evolved, i cant help but think he has evolved into something far less desirable than what he was before. I believe his previous exhibition in London was a far stronger body of work with more stand out/striking pieces. And also, whats with the huge number of bondage pieces. Why is it every artist and his dog, feels they must go though this stage.
Sorry for the rant but i was a huge fan of his work but cant help feel let own by this show.

Think you might have missed the point on the "bondage" pieces. These are connected with a travelling exhibition called Journey, highlighting the horrors of sex trafficking.

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by trasbash on Oct 4, 2009 21:26:27 GMT 1, i must admit that i dont know the names of the poorer pieces. Basically they were the unsold ones plus a few others. I am interested to know how others thought the new charcoal portraits compaired to the older ones.

i would love to see some of his old works in the flesh then i could compare! some of the grubby little autographic charcoals were my favourites! oftern the most beautiful drawings i have seen have been very simple and drawn in seconds.

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 5, 2009 14:55:41 GMT 1, Just caught up with most of this thread and checked out the art from the show online (at his site). There are a few pieces which I can't stop looking at (such as Siren and Black kiss), but in the main I'm not enjoying much of this work to be honest. I think that some of the works on paper are particularly weak, in particular Come and get me boys and the Escorts pieces). Would still love to have been able to see the work properly in person and get a better feel for the pieces up close.
To be fair, I think it's great that Laz and the artist have tried to cater to a broad spectrum of buyers with pricing, but there's plenty of work there that I wouldn't want for free.
