Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by They call me Stephen on Sept 24, 2009 23:31:08 GMT 1, ^amazing, amazing, amazing
cannot wait to see this....been following antony's work since I first saw this back in 99/00 or so, well before i discovered banksy and this whole street art scene. he has to be the most talented artist out there at the moment for me...i just wish i could afford to buy as many of his pieces as i would like to but bank balances say no! boo
that above painting completely captivated me when i first saw it yet the progression and depth of his new work is staggering. I find the pieces on paper to be the stronger from the show which also happen to be the cheapest! it's not so often that that is the case

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by chiefhk on Sept 25, 2009 7:30:06 GMT 1, To me, seeing the works hung and as a group really makes such a difference compared to viewing them on a pdf file. I'm sure they look many times better in person!

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by origo on Sept 25, 2009 8:38:38 GMT 1, Personally I really donยดt get this way of hanging the pieces, they blend too much and the individual beauty of the work looses itยดs context.
Lovely work though, one can only dream.

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by hlarmy on Sept 25, 2009 8:46:32 GMT 1, Can someone explain what's so good or groundbreaking about Micallef's work; I've only seen one painting by the artist that has impressed me (and which admittedly I personally think is one of the best paintings I have ever seen), otherwise it doesn't do a thing for me.
Don't shoot me down - I'm not looking for an argument, more some understanding as to why he is rated so highly?

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by bazzj04 on Sept 25, 2009 9:10:03 GMT 1, Great stuff , i was looking forward to seeing a few pics from the show today , Going to get along there tommorow ,
hlarmy , what painting was it that really impressed you.? Ass for the reason he is so ground breaking personally for me , i just really like his work i couldnt put my finger on one thing that makes it groundbreaaking etc , Although i dont think its really ground breaking just beutiful pieces, Theres a interview (links on this thread) and he says something there along the lines of, what makes great art , music, film etc , is the goosebump type feeling you get from certain things, this cant be explained just happens , and i think thats a great way of thinking about work , rather than having to have a page of a4 next to each piece discribing it all , It is what it is, and makes you feel how it makes you feel , its a personal thing i guess.
Looking forward to checking it out... Im still after one of the La show Poster if anyone whants to sell one , Please ,,,

I prefer that piece to anything in this show. Get too 'dark' and it just looks a bit cliche...

Quite a paradox that statement. I guess the answer is in your question. Which is a cryptic response.
Personally I rate him so highly because I feel he captures a lot of the zeitgeist of our age, its very of the moment, in a world full of information and communication, we're all still so lonely inside, we all want to be loved, but what is love and we all have to battle our inner demons (self worth, how we view ourselves, how we want the world to view us). Plus they are just so damn good to look at.

I was trying to come up with something similarly clever but you said it so well (plus my head is still spinning a bit).

lovely response monkey...I found the paradox quite amusing, but i guess I think of zola as one of the best footballers ever but hate Chelsea
I'm not sure Micallef has to be groundbreaking to be viewed as a great artist, I mean stencilling wasn't invented by Banksy was it? Micallef is wonderful for me simply because of the emotion that pours out of the figurative work, to stand in front of his pieces just literally takes my breath away, the sadness, anger, hate, pain, love and so it goes on that I see in them is something almost indescribale and something that happens all too rarely for me these days
on the balance though at the show last night, I feel that the upstairs section needed to be more spread out, there was wayyyy too much work on one wall, alot of the head studies were lost in the 'busyness' - strange indeed
Also the sex card/sex trafficing pieces although strongly themed for me at least hark back too much to his eyestorm work - his skill doesn't lie in these 'messaged' pieces for me at least

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by motor on Sept 25, 2009 10:19:08 GMT 1, This guy can PAINT. Looking at the pieces I am amazed how 'simple' they look and yet how powerful they are. For me it's because his ghost-like style creates a space for a communication between the artist and the audience. You don't get the straight answer. At the first sight it is a bit of chaos then you start to see some lines but the painting draws you deeper and deeper until it strikes you and kaboom. In the painting you see lots of questions but you won't find the answers there - there are in you. And this kind of stuff you just don't see these days. Everything is too straightforward, served right there on the plate in front our noses (with a remote as a desert).
As for me there are some weak pieces in the show (london underground theme) but most of the rest is a pure class. The best pieces are on the ground floor.

I just wished I am there in person to experience it and take it all in!!

Not sure why the coloured heads weren't popular. They looked great. A couple weren't on the original sales PDF, so that's probably why people were unsure.
As for the Sex Trade pieces... I don't like that child like drawing style as much as the paintings and "portraits". They felt out of place at this show I think, or should have had a room on their own.

Who needs groundbreaking when the guy can paint emotions that captivate your very soul.

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by chiefhk on Sept 25, 2009 11:23:55 GMT 1, I guess to each his own. Personally, and that's just from looking at pictures, I'm really loving the coloured and non-coloured heads! Head studies and all! I think each has its own quality to it and the colours definitely work very well (in my opinion).
I can understand the sex trade pieces not being everyone's cup of tea. It wouldn't be my top few purchases (if I had unlimited funds)

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by angel41 on Sept 25, 2009 12:29:20 GMT 1, AM makes it look so easy but the simplicity of his work is very hard to achieve. Every stroke of the brush is a vital part of the whole.
I don't think there is anyone out there at the moment that can achieve such emotion with so little marks and make it appear so effortless. Awesome!

Antony Micallef - Lazarides - 25th Sept, by Zippy on Sept 25, 2009 12:49:08 GMT 1, I have just posted the following on Kall Wandy but thought I should post it on here as it is more appropriate in responding to some of the above comments......
i'm not going to write some meandering, garbled, long winded reply to some of the previous posts as I am a little 'worse for wear' today!
AM has produced some amazing pieces for all price ranges. If you have ยฃ30k++ you can be the proud owner of a stunningly executed original on canvas. On the other hand, if you have a smaller budget of a few thousand you are also spoilt for choice on some amazing small originals.
Laz has been "verbally abused" across the forums in the past for only selling 'high prices art to high profile clients' but now we can see there is art for all budgets and he is now getting (wrongly) accused of selling cheap art.
The show had some truly amazing pieces spanning all of the price ranges and for that, I stand and applaud AM and Laz for putting on a great show, with quality art at fair prices.
Reading posts it seems 'you cant please all of the people all of the time'.
PS. Before I get accused of anything, I do not work for Laz, I am not married to him, I did not receive any e-mail preview, offers to buy pre-show etc...

I agree that AM and Laz should be applauded for the price change - a very brave move and one alot of more mainstream galleries wouldn't do
