Cartrain v Damien Hirst - Tate Pencils, by Daniel Silk on Sept 10, 2009 0:54:25 GMT 1, Really unusual stats from the people watching the Cartrain Interview video on youtube
68% Female, and 50% of those are aged 55-64
Cartrain attracting a completely new section of the public to this sort of art? Your guess is as good as mine.

I want to know what the judge has got to say about all this.

Cartrain v Damien Hirst - Tate Pencils, by robinbanks on Sept 11, 2009 10:54:24 GMT 1, After reading all the arguments and counter arguments and watching some of the vids I've come to the conclusion that Cartrain is just a stupid kid.
It makes sense really - his work has always lacked intelligence / originality.
This "prank" of his was neither clever nor funny. Surely it would have been much funnier (and a lot less illegal) to insert a piece of his own into Hirst's Pharamcy - maybe a pack of Hirst Sense of Humour Erasers or something along those lines (I dunno - I'm not the one pretending to be an artist)? Maybe then send Mr Hirst a bunch of flowers with a card saying he hoped he liked the gift - no hard feelings. Even make a humorous short 5 minute documentary about the whole ridiculous affair and post it on YouTube. And then let us all know about it.
But no - Cartrain is just a stupid kid. The trouble is, in the eyes of the law, he may well be stupid but he aint a kid. And so I fear this may be a very costly lesson for him to learn.

My girlfriend worked in posh restaurant in London and once Daryl Hannah gave her, her hand bag to look after. She rang me and I persuaded her to put something in the handbag. All she could find was a photo of a Chinese couple getting married. He he. I still imagine Daryl's confusion.

Maybe he'll be tempted to nick some pencils from Mr Big's cell for a laugh?

Cartrain v Damien Hirst - Tate Pencils, by taxidermot on Sept 12, 2009 0:13:48 GMT 1, IN 1913 I HAD THE HAPPY IDEA TO FASTEN A BICYCLE WHEEL TO A KITCHEN STOOL AND WATCH IT TURN. A FEW MONTHS LATER I BOUGHT A CHEAP REPRODUCTION OF A WINTER EVENING LANDSCAPE, WHICH I CALLED "PHARMACY" AFTER ADDING TWO SMALL DOTS, ONE RED AND ONE YELLOW, IN THE HORIZON.

Cartrain v Damien Hirst - Tate Pencils, by johnsmedley on Sept 14, 2009 12:48:19 GMT 1, Charlie Brooker has his say:
www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/sep/14/charlie-brooker-damien-hirst
Highlights:
"Overvalued, irksome, conceited, pudge-faced, balding, boring, awful celebrity art nob Damien Hirst..."
"Cartrain's almost certainly a self-promoting gump and a poor man's Banksy.."

Cartrain v Damien Hirst - Tate Pencils, by Cedric Mnich on Sept 14, 2009 13:02:32 GMT 1, Anyway, whether good or bad for Cartrain, it is quite a lot of publicity. If art collectors are rich and stupid enough to buy Hirst's art for millions, why shouldn't they be stupid enough to buy Cartrain's as well ? Cartrain's art could easily become the next trendy artist just because of that feud. This, despise the fact his art is far from being exceptional (but after all, is Hirst's art that exceptional ?). I am pretty happy to have bought the Ransom print, it could become some good investment faster than i thought given all the media coverage. Many people (including journalists) are very critical towards Cartrain's stuff but I guess many of us would love to have such an extended press coverage... (sorry if some of my english might be approximate sometimes, it's not my native language). An adage says "Good or bad publicity is still publicity". What do you think ? Do you think Cartrain's risk was worth it ?

Cartrain v Damien Hirst - Tate Pencils, by Adamski on Sept 14, 2009 15:47:45 GMT 1, If cartrain is 19 it completely changes the context of his 'prank'. He will be charged and judged as an adult. This completely negates the argument that 'he's just a kid...'etc and in fact just shows that he's a bit thick.
Not in the original intent of the joke, but in the desperation to publicise himself and sell prints after the event. He could quite easily have turned it to benefit himself as an artist and with a bit more thought he could probably have created something quite clever.
Along side that, there should be serious questions towards those that are close to him and offering the benefit of more experience.
Although you've not actually done anything wrong here Silky, it's pretty clear that you have a relationship with Cartrain and as such should probably have taken some responsibility in trying to offer him some sensible advice. Not to mention his shambles of a gallery, what were you lot doing?
'bless him he's just a kid...' actually he's just a bit of a nause.

For Cartrain to state ' I sublimate many of my cravings which cannot be satisfied realistically through wishful thinking by the replacement of intelligent action' Shows me he is not as you quote 'A bit thick' His statement shows that his actions were well thought out including any consequences that may follow. Judging by his previous pranks i am sure surprises will follow and any consequences will work in his favor
