What's the best tape to use in framing?, by curiousgeorge on Jul 10, 2008 15:44:05 GMT 1, Google PH7-70 conservation tape What are you framing exactly? S&S, you are curious! ;D
Busted
I would think long and hard about using Japenese tape, if you have never used it before. As far as i know the VERY best hinging tape is not available in the UK, the best one uses a 100% reversible starch paste.

japanese hinging tape is the best you can get. no marks and totally acid free. Granted, gaffa tape may leave a residue.
spenie, your welcome.

What's the best tape to use in framing?, by Gentle Mental on Jul 10, 2008 17:48:48 GMT 1, mylar corners are safe but a bitch to use, as they are tiny, and could only hold so much of a corner, tough if the print is anything larger than 50 x70 and of really heavy paper...
One of my giclee was so heavy, that over time, it forced the corners to "pop" off its mylar holder, causing the entire print to collapse inside the frame. it was nightmarish.
Try bagsunlimited.com they have corners and tapes... heard good things about Lineco (haven't used it yet)

What are you using this tape for exactly?

What's the best tape to use in framing?, by sal on May 9, 2011 22:28:28 GMT 1, hey peeps.. I just wanted to ask you about your opinion on using Lineco's archival mounting strips (http://www.framedestination.com/Photo_Corners_and_Strips/4_Inch_Clear_Mounting_Strips_L533-4015/item/faphcn4mst0000000000/) for framing quality prints?!.. I also have mylar corners, but I dont think those would work on bigger size prints...
ANY suggestion, tip, idea is welcome!..

What's the best tape to use in framing?, by kultur on May 10, 2011 0:38:11 GMT 1, Lineco has good stuff.
Anything acid free really is fine... but for those that really do not want anything adhered to the print should use www.utrechtart.com/dsp_view_product.cfm?item=37828
With this product there is a greater chance of the image moving slightly as you have to add some space for the paper to expand and contract or you get the warbling.

this is a great way to hold in your print without your print touching any type of adhesive and offer the print alot of extra support in addition to the mylar corners especially for the larger prints

What's the best tape to use in framing?, by Ovaltine! on May 16, 2013 4:27:29 GMT 1, I work at a frame shop here in VA and when the artwork is expensive and we have to use tape to mount, its usually linen hinging tape. I believe its by Lineco? something like that. Or sometimes we use rice paper tape. Also it ends up most scotch tape is actually completely acid free.... Why they dont advertise that I have no idea. Kind of blew my mind when I first found that out.

What's the best tape to use in framing?, by Deleted on May 16, 2013 13:25:24 GMT 1, Linen tape is quite hard for conservators to remove so I'd go for a Japanese tape or p90 but apparently p90 is a little hard to remove as well. Put it this way.... Use p90 or Japanese tape as its thin and doesn't show up. BUT.... The thing is you shouldn't try to remove the tape when re selling. Just cut it off the backing but leave it on the print. Reason.... It is acid free and won't damage the print if left on and also won't devalue the print as its acid free and won't damage the print. People damage prints by trying to tear off the tape. There is a reason it damages and removes part of the paper it's attached to... Is not made to be removed.
If it needs to be removed it got to go to a conservator to be removed by chemicals..... That's why they get the big bucks.
Anyhow...hope this helps.

What's the best tape to use in framing?, by iamzero on May 16, 2013 16:30:21 GMT 1, Don't use ph7-70... Hard to remove and not good. P90 is not bad if you have no experience of other water based tapes. Hayaku is what I use, moisten with a little DI water and apply but the top stuff is wheat based powder cooked up and applied to Japanese papers and then attached to the artwork.

What's the best tape to use in framing?, by siveone on Mar 25, 2015 21:47:50 GMT 1, I recommend Neschen P90 (regular). The P90plus is too strong. For pasting some papers and backboards (not the artwork) P90plus is usefull. But for the prints P90 is perfect. In case of reframing or putting the artwork out of the frame you should leave the tape on the artwork and just cut it of. The acid-free tape wont hurt the paper, but the removing might damage it. Just use smal stripes.
Good luck.

What's your reasoning behind it Roy? I've been gathering everything I need to begin Some DIY framing myself and have yet to settle on archival tape or corners. I know tape is safer if the frame were to fall, but is it a better piece of mind not to use tape at all?
