Morons was the last print ever., by verbalkint on Jul 7, 2007 5:32:23 GMT 1, As for 'who is running the show', well who do you think owns POW? Banksy has his fingers in several pies, Do you think he would release his prints through a site which gives him a s**tty percentage when he could sell them through his own website and take 100% of the cash, or do you think it might be possible that he is also taking a cut of everyone elses releases too? Anyone who thinks that Banksy is not one of the smartest business men in the art world is very much mistaken. There are 4 owners at POW, but Banksy is not one of them. Banksy isn't so much of the smartest businessman as a wonderful artist with a great deal of talent and relevant things to say in his work. He has a great rep in Laz, who is the PT Barnum of the art world at the moment. Steve latches onto upcoming artists that are going somewhere and uses his business sense to try and propel them to the next level.
If you believe that banksy is foolish enough to let other people take his money then you are seriously underestimating the guy. Look at the art world, most artists are so desperate to be exhibited that they will sign a contract for 5% of profits gladly, just to exhibit their work. POW is smoke and mirrors, as i was explaining to someone else, a company may have X amount of registered owners, that does not stop a deal being done to put other people on a percentage. My friend owns a hairdressers, i borrowed him the money to set it up, big risk on my part seen as the bloke has no business sense at all, but i agreed to do it for my money back, plus 20% of his Profits. Im not listed as a 20% owner of his business, but i still get the money.
If banksy left POW tomorrow they would lose upto 2 million a year, more if you consider the potential of banksy prints, the amounts they could charge and the numbers they could produce. They know this and Banksy knows this, Do you honestly think he is stupid enough to take a wank percentage of the money for his releases while he watches a bunch of talentless tossers take the money from his work? I dont know banksy, i dont claim to know him, but i know several people in the art world and everyone who has had dealings with him or knows people who have say that he is one of the cannyest businessmen in art.
And what you said about steve laz may be true, but the bloke is a c**t and i have said that to his face too. There is not an agent or gallery in the world who would not love to have banksy on their books. Laz may have had a hand in creating banksys popularity, but banksy does not need laz as much as laz needs him, at least not now and that is an undisputable fact. I dont think it will be long before banksy tells him to do one and sorts and promotes his own shows. Or maybe you think that is beyond his intelligence

Morons was the last print ever., by jam on Jul 7, 2007 5:56:01 GMT 1, Some valid points there... and I don't doubt Banksy is a smart guy, the voice in his art makes that abundantly clear. I do question how involved he is in the profiteering side of his work however. I know some incredibly intelligent people, and I have seen them go down in flames in business. Most of the people I know who are successful in business and intelligent in their own right, have gotten themselves there because they know enough to surround themselves with people who can best compliment them by taking on things they themselves are not capable of excelling at.

Morons was the last print ever., by verbalkint on Jul 7, 2007 6:18:56 GMT 1, very true jam, very true indeed. I believe that John D Rockerfeller, one of the richest men in history said the key to success is not to brilliant at everything yourself, but to surround yourself with brilliant people. The real trick though is to convince those brilliant people to stay working for you when they realise you are making billions off their hard work. Rockerfeller could do that, inspire brilliant people to work for, and to look up to him.
However, i would not say that i exelled at school (my spelling will testify to that!) I left at 16 with a few GCSE's, no business training at all, now i am a diamond trader! Im not saying that banksy has a degree in business, he doesnt, but what is the essence of any business? Supply and demand, f**keverything else, all i care about is that if i can buy something for £100 and sell it for £400, then i am on to a f**kingwinner, and everything else is unimportant. You get some dickheads going into business with 9 degrees between them and the reason it fails is they spend so much time and effort doing pointless things, like surveys and market strategys, brainstorming sessions and a load of other bollocks that means absolutely nothing if you know you have a product which people want and you can get it for less than what they are willing to pay for it. You dont see drug dealers going round surveying smackheads on how much they will pay for a bag of smack and the reason you dont see that is the dealers know they have something people will buy and that they will make a killing, same princile with diamonds and exactly the same principle with art.
Banksy knows he is onto a winner and he doesnt need anyone to tell him how to do it anymore. The whole anonimity thing was pure genius, the legend, the myth and the enigma surrounding him is immense (like kendo nagasaki on saturday afternoon wrestling!!)
And i make the link between art and drugs, not by accident. One group of people will sell everything they have to get a fix, they will wait around for hours in the rain for their dealer to show up, they will lie to their partners and families where their money has gone, they will stay up for hours on end, you will often see these people with bags under their eyes. They will not show up for work and jepordize their jobs so they can go out and get their next fix, but its all worth while for that feeling of pure bliss. And the other group are smackheads
