Hopefully this will work - thanks!
I've just bought a Grin Reaper and it seems that the colour plates may have slipped during the printing process, as the yellow is slightly off centre, leaving a gap around where it should fit exactly onto the face. Also, the edges of the sythe, cloak and skeletal hand all appear slightly to have missed their target.
It seems to me that the black plates may possibly be the culprits.
Has anyone else noticed the same problem and if so, any comments?
As it is screenprint, it happens sometimes that the registration is slightly offset as it maybe the case for your copy. It is hand printed so each copy will be different as opposed to machine printed. On the Morons some numbers are lightly off too, I have seen a Jack and Jill with the same thing. On some Warhol work you also can notice that. I really like that imperfection somehow in the screenprint as it is a unique piece even if there is 350 od copies out there. Of course someone could argue by paying £50, £5000 , £6000 or ... pounds into a print, would expect to have it as perfect as possible...
First off, congrats on owning a piece that is the absolute *tits* (i.e., AWESOME!), because there is no other way to describe GR. Rabbitlegs is right--there seem to be quite a few with printing irregularities, probably due to the black which is rumored to contain tar and which I'd imagine is more difficult to work with than traditional inks. Of the several that I've seen with printing irregularities, there was one with a massive black glob on the face of the clock, another with several globs on the face of the clock, several with slightly irregular borders, one with black speckles in the background, etc. Mine has a tiny speck in the black border that has no black-just a tiny speck the size of two or three pixels. Weird.
Anyways, what options do you have? If its going to irritate you, and you have the option to return it, then do so. Its not worth having anything that is a source of frustration. If you can't return it, then the options are a bit more limited. My suggestion would be to frame that sucker up, and hang it on the wall. The artist who made it is famous for street art, the point of which is most certainly NOT perfect execution. Its a little bit messy by nature. For me, the slightly offset alignment would be a very pleasant reminder of the guerilla nature of the art itself. I'd find myself smiling at the fact that my piece, probably more than any of the other GR's in existence, is closer to the real deal--the actual graff done by Banksy.
So you see, you may either have the most disappointing GR in existence, or a piece that is as close to a one-off as any GR will ever be (which makes it quite special indeed). Its all a matter of perspective. Be sure to let us know what you end up doing with it! In any case, it is absolutely no less of a Grin Reaper than any of the other 300--it is just different. I, for one, dig it.

i have to disagree a little with what's been said so far. mine has none of the flaws that have been mentioned, although i know there are a fair few about like it, so maybe i'm a little biased. i think that the odd flaw would add character to any other print, just not this one. it's beauty is in it's striking-ness, depth and detail. so to have any part of that flawed, to me, would totally detract from the whole genius of it.
especially considering the problem you're dealing with, a blur/shadow effect, to me i would always think i was pissed and seeing double when i looked at it.
my advice would be to trust yourself and your judgement, only you know what bugs you and if this looks like it would join that club then i'd get rid. if not, look forward to years of smug self-satisfaction that you own true beauty.
i'll PM you.
how you doing jay by the way? you got any pictures of your grin for me? long time no speak, hope you good pal. take care
LW... I agree to the mostpart with what you say. The fact mine has a slight 'Registration flaw' (Thanks Beejoir) around the outer edge use to bug me a bit. But once framed Im a happy bunny.
However with this print I feel I could get use to it even if someone spilt a brew on it
its that amazing, and if mine was a little off 'Registration' I dont think it would bother me.
Levisstubstears...I would try live with it for a few months (Im sure you will get use to him) Hes Very special IMO ;D
So long as I open my eyes.. and see my Reaper first thing in the morning...I know everything is OK
I guess it comes down to whether you can live with it, it's a lot of money to pay for something if you're not happy with it, in which case I'd get my money back sooner rather than later. There's plenty more out there (you might need to wait and you might end up paying more + framing costs) perhaps you could buy one of those, although as has been pointed out you maybe swopping one flaw for another.
hey levis, As someone who has recently purchased their first Banksy which also has a slight flaw in it, I would say simply, if you love it, if you can live with it, then stick with it. My decision was made a whole lot easier, as I am pretty sure I would never want to sell it...that's the only question I guess, if you're buying as an investment, does it alter it's value down the line?

He he! Sorry about that Tom. Been a little distracted lately (pssst--skydiving is addictive--do so at extreme risk to your free-time and checking account).
Grin and the gang are living quiet lives in their tubes (gasp!), but it is for their own good. None of the framers in Seattle seem to know a damn thing about street art in general, let alone Banksy in particular. And frankly, I just don't trust them. But there is a legendary framer in Eugene Oregon, and the lady knows her stuff--only problem is, its 250 miles away which is a bit too far for a quick drop off/pick up.
But the solution is elegant and beautiful; the wife and I are going to road trip the Pac-coast hiway this summer, finishing with a tri in Bend Oregon (kinda near Eugene). So, we're going to hand deliver the prints on the way out, pick 'em up framed and ready on the way back home. Ta-da! Its going to be a very fun summer.
BTW, if you happen to make it out to Seattle this year, I'll get you up to 13,000 feet and help you get an insane shot of adrenaline--on me. ;D You know you want to Tom!

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you do criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.
