sorry 5 need to bow out of this thread... Miss Bugs I'm afraid I've never heard of. so no idea... C215, yep he's done some nice stuff... but he's hardly ahead of alot of artists I could mention.... Blek painted illegal for years and without any PR or sales... I agree that this list is utter crap, but i cant put Blek before C215 for street work in 08. Blek has put in the work over the years, and has my respect for that, but his output this year has been print based with very little or no street pieces i can think of or any that have come to my attention, apart from Cans. But this list is purely based on sales which is BS People should realise that writing lists like these opens them up to some serious criticism and abuse... If i ever come across them, I for one will tell them to stop talking bollocks... Agreed Ron on the Blek output for this year... But he's still a legend and a thoroughly nice bloke... I'm getting fed up with so called "artists" I've never heard of being branded "street Artists" that term is getting put around far too much of late... FACT!

I think most peoples STREET Artist and URBAN Artist top 10 lists for this year would look very different They might even have totally different names on them. Reminder this does say URBAN Artists for 2008

Art republic, who the f uck are art republic?, if you were to create a top 100 gallery list I doubt they would feature, (I am actually really surprised Dan Baldwin wasn't squeezed in there too) Yeah, you would think Dan would have been on the list. I hope your joking....without the smileys its hard too tell

No mention of Burning Candy! Have your say now, vote at www.streetartawards.com/Will be interesting to see the results on Thursday, its events like this that really matter where the fans have power and not a gallery opinion in sight!!! But it will only be successful if people actually vote. So what you waiting for!

I have never liked contests, awards, competitions, votes and top tens... this top ten sounds more like a new way of advertizing than anything else, in fact... The street art scene (or urban art scene, or graffiti scene, call it what you want) is now borrowing devices that once belonged to what we were precisely fighting against when we wrote on the walls ! But I guess those times are gone ;( stencils in Tours (France), Jef Aérosol, January 1983... (still unsigned, hadn't decided about the "jef aerosol" name yet, and no red arrow)

any list like this that does not have Shepard Fairey as #1 for 2008 is not accurate(IMO). Banksy's blow-up in 2006-2007 aside, no one in this genre has ever had a year like Fairey's 2008. GQ Man of the Year, the most iconic image to come out of this genre, ridiculous amounts of media coverage, etc., etc., etc. all the while still owning the streets(and getting arrested for it).

Don't you think JR's impact has been tremendous in the UK in 2008 ? He's done a lot on this side of the channel for a few years now, but I remember explaining who he was on this very forum only a few months ago, as nobody seemed to have heard of him... A few weeks later, he signed the contract with Lazarides and hit the walls of London. He is now becoming a giant and he deserves it. And he's still so young, he could be my son !

The only thing I will point out is that Faile and Shepard aren't British, and the list is top 10 for the UK art scene. But then including Blek makes the list even odder.
I conclude the list is total crap.
I am glad to see Pure Evil getting a nod. Rather like his work . And Miss Bugs at #2 is nice to see when I just shelled out on the last release!

I think people just need to take this with a pinch of salt. As others have noticed, these top XX lists are published all the time, and reported on as factual news. For example Birds Eye will publish a report on the greatest take aways ever, and it's reported as the last word on the matter whereas it's the result of 50 questionnaires sent out to people who bought fish fingers in February.
It's a good starting point for discussion, but yeah, lets be realistic.....the results are going to be biased.
