mimmo rotella, by Neverwork on Aug 9, 2008 12:43:02 GMT 1, ...haven't seen his work discussed on here before, i've been a fan for many years and thought his work would be of interest to some of you, here's a little bit about rotella, he was born in italy in 1918, had his first solo show exhibiting abstract paintings in rome (1951) convinced that painting had little else to offer, he began to scavenge the city instead, tearing off sections of advertising/film posters taking them back to his studio, then rearranging them initially onto paper/canvas. he first exhibited his dรฉcollages in 1954, exhibited world wide with huge recognition. sadly died in 2006. here are a couple of his works...
take it easy

mimmo rotella, by lee3 on Aug 9, 2008 15:32:24 GMT 1, I've studied him, Hains, and Villegle as I've simply fallen heavily for their work over the past decade. I remember quite well seeing a show in the late 90s and wondering who in god's name would buy that overpriced nonsense. Sure enough it had a quality that brought me back to the show a few times though I could not afford anything for sale at the time. About 4 years later I was able to get my first. From m studies, most books credit Villegle with formulating the concept to tear the posters down in late '49. But, even that is debatable as about 2 years ago at auction there was a crude abstract torn poster that was credited to Villegle from '48 (though the date could well have been wrong.)
Regardless, it's quite powerful work especially in concentration and much of the work of all 3 artsts has faded and discolored over the years giving it an even more enduring quality imo. Faile are the most obviously influenced collective by the work of the 3 New Realists (Rotella didn't sign the manifesto in Yves Klein's house in the early 60s but exhibited in the group shows with them all and certainly was one of the stronger artists in the bunch.)
All 3 of them had some wonderful compositions in the 70s when Dubuffet had shows in both Paris and Rome and there were a ton of posters displayed in both cities promoting his Hourloupe shows and they all had decollages with these Dubuffet's in them which are just striking today. Much of the adverts in all of their work focus on other artists beit actors, musicians, comedians, etc. Rotella was always fixated with Marilyn Monroe as she is undoubtedly his most common subject which makes sense as this was Europe's complimentary movement to Pop in the states. There is a GORGEOUS Rotella that he did with one of Warhol's prints of Marilyn from the '67 edition. I would LOVE to own it but would cost a fortune though there was a print run done of this image too.
Unfortunately, the prints do little justice to the work of all 3 artist that practiced with torn posters. For those on the European side of the pond, Villegle (sadly, the last of the 3 still with us today) will be featured in a major retrospective at Paris' Centre Pompidou next month. I doubt I'll be able to make it and will rely on reviews and photos online.

This piece I've seen in the flesh many times at Modernism in SF. It's huge, rough guess from memory being 3 meters by 1.5 meters and costs in excess of $120k (again, from memory.) Though, even that price/scale pales comparatively to MANY of the artists we follow on this board which is a scary thought considering.
If one is serious about picking up Rotella or Hains, from what I've seen the auction block is your friend. It's always tough to discern quickly whether an artist's work takes a step back in price upon their death if the market is flooded with supply or handled poorly by the estate. Both of these estates/foundations have done a wonderful job thus far handling their work. For an exercise in how NOT to handle an artist's death, look no further than Sam Francis. In the case of Villegle, there are still a few dealers with very large supplies in addition to the auction block:
