BIG shows coming up?, by snakes on Jul 17, 2008 23:40:52 GMT 1, Seriously considering booking some holiday time and flying over for a few days to see this. Any chance of catching any of the artists doing their stuff or is it all closed off and private until the opening day? I'm always worried I'll miss stuff too. Maybe there should be some sort of events calendar... (unless there already is and I've missed it!)
I did not think Mantis was UK?
I thought he was a South African living in Australia. Could be wrong

BIG shows coming up?, by Ad Hoc Art on Jul 17, 2008 23:54:34 GMT 1, Obviously I am biased (shameful smile), but I think our upcoming London Police, Flying Fortress, PEZ and Eine show is gonna be off the hook. Also, our year ender...A display of original wood and lino hand cut blocks with prints pulled from the same blocks featuring Swoon, David Ellis, Judith Supine, Gaia, ELBOW-TOE, Imminent Disaster, Mike & Martin from Cannonball Press and many more is gonna rock the very foundations of Brooklyn! (ok, that's just in my opinion...you decide). Lastly, it seems like there is a ton more interest than I even realized in our upcoming DAIN solo in January. I ain't gonna lie, that's gonna be pretty cool. We have people flying in from the UK for that one.

Full details of the Mr Jago at Stolenspace now released
www.stolenspace.com/section.php?xSec=204 or
MR. JAGO 'Cloud Talk' 11.09.08 - 28.09.08 Stolenspace are delighted to bring you ‘Cloud Talk’ a new direction and body of work from artist Mr Jago.
The 1st London solo show of artist Duncan Jago will showcase new work on Canvas, Silk, wood & installations, as well as the release of 2 new limited edition screen prints. ‘I see figures & form everywhere, in water, carpet patterns, shadows, clouds, everything is an abstract character and they are free’ says Jago.
‘Of all weather phenomena, I find clouds the most fascinating, from the silky filaments of high altitude cirrus to the towering, threatening mass of storm-bearing cumulonimbus, clouds are as varied as the new work itself’. These self same elements are reflective in his latest working’s ‘I love cloud watching, from nowhere the fluffy mass morphing shapes from a cunning fox with whispy ears to familiar faces ’.
Mr Jago seems to have the ability to see a different world and objects amongst the very mundane. Whether viewing his work on silk, canvas or print, each piece provides every new set of observing eyes with a plethora of colour, mystique and the key ingredient, interpretation.
His work has found a new style. Looking at it you sense that the artist isn’t concentrating so hard, the brush has been allowed to take it’s own direction, it feels more instinctive.
When asked where the inspiration for his new style has come from Mr Jago echoes this ‘I’m not concentrating on a style anymore, I no longer enjoy the limitations of outlines, but would rather let the colours describe the forms. I have discarded a point of reference or sketches, and as a result I have found that I feel much more liberated & at ease to express. In a strange way I also seem to be a lot more at ease with the end result than ever before’.
This evolution has seen the early ‘Scrawl Collective’ scratchy style through to this more free flowing, abstact mentalism, just cutting loose, freestyling and doing what feels right. Simple in it’s complexity, complex in it’s simplicity.
Jago’s style is almost impossible to define or pin down, but cannot be summed up any more succinctly than in a recent piece by Harlan Levey, Creative Director, Modart Magazine.
'We can travel back with Mr Jago and look at how he soaked in the cultures brewing around him and took his inspiration in a completely different direction from so many other artists of his generation. His style often seems to be almost representative of much of what's come out of hip hop, toy and graffiti art, and though he's been working the rounds for more than a decade, there isn't another artist out there who reminds you of Mr Jago. With the speed of information exchanged today how f**king rare is that? It isn't copied and nobody has been able to copy it. This is because 'it' in this case, is Mr Jago. Period.’
