IS THE URBAN ART MARKET READY FOR REAL GRAFF ART?, by romanywg on Jun 2, 2008 22:14:56 GMT 1, I did ask beforehand if he minded being shown and he didn't, otherwise I wouldn't have shown it. Plus he looks like Will Self.

IS THE URBAN ART MARKET READY FOR REAL GRAFF ART?, by thebleedingedge on Jun 3, 2008 5:46:29 GMT 1, No no, see there you guys go again comparing apples with wotsits. Just because it's freehand doesn't make it "real graff", that's not really what I think of when I hear the term anyway and I think the two artists focussed on in this thread are in completely different camps.
Look at CES, he is writing his name, you guys were seeing mayan characters and styling but what is really there is a solid letter structure that has taken ages to evolve and a style applied to that, tight outlines with bubbles and flames and the outline is perfect to contrast with the absolutely crazy colour scheme, thats all style, and that style has had to evolve from letters. Letters might seem like a silly thing for the basis of what he is doing, but it is the hardest thing to perfect, the hardest thing to be unique with, the hardest thing to agonize over and it has resulted in an amazing ability to draw all types of other things on walls with spraypaint because letters and graffiti are all about flow. He has been bitten by the bug, he might go do a lone character in a production, paint a million canvasses and make a sculpture out of boiled eggs but at the end of the day, when he is drunk and on the shitter in a pub, he is writing his name, when he has a napkin and pen, he is writing. Now take that, stick it on a rooftop at 3:20AM on a Sunday, and you have a better idea of real graff (but I'd still have to type another 1000 of these posts before you got it).
Snub, don't know too much about him, saw a sticker once I think, but he seems to be in the "recognisable logo" camp, he is building a brand which is basically the next evolution of the original street logo era, he is about a repeatable recognisable character, it's a completely different thing, he is all about marketting really, everything he puts up all adds to the brand of snub23. You could recognize his sticker from knowing he was behind that piece, or a stencil or a flyer or shirt or whatever he chooses to get the brand out there with. Even if we isolate it to the piece, the execution is completely different, snub's character is made of a few tones of pink for fills and black and white for outlines, ces has fuck knows how many colour pattern fills with amazing detail on the insides and an outline that makes me cry (it's just too clean and is oozing style). Can you imagine how lost in the colours you would be if you were doing that top CES right before the white outline?
Different things entirely.
