Sotheby's Contemporary Art 5th October, by caruso on Sept 20, 2018 14:20:40 GMT 1, This almost makes the British Museum card estimate reasonable at 800 GBP, that is if you want a 'some kind of' Banksy that is. Those estimates are totally out of reach.

Yeh that Girl with Balloon will go well above the estimate if you were to go by the 400,000+ the last canvas went for. Another nice Banksy lot in the Hong Kong sale i just put up

Thanks, if you see any with good provenance can you throw up a link. The estimates for Banksy originals are all over the place. They don't seem to go by the last few results, always under. If you go by the monkey one this should be about 600,000 to 800,000 estimate.

What this thread lacks is a discussion about the particular variant of the 2006 Girl With Balloon image being auctioned on Friday.
Here's a photo I took yesterday evening at Sotheby's:
Contrast it with the screenprint:
When comparing the above two works, the different number of fingers visible on the girl's right hand is immediately noticeable, along with the distinct details of her clothing and hair.
More importantly, however, see the differences in hand position of the outstretched left arm. The result, in my view, is a loss of ambiguity for the 2006 canvas. It feels directive to me, suggesting more strongly that the wind has blown the balloon from the girl's hand.
The print version of the image is arguably stronger, since it allows for a broader interpretation โ including one where the balloon might instead have been willingly released. If you love something, set it free. Note as well the differences in facial expression โ and therefore the mood evoked by each piece. In the 2006 canvas, the girl comes across as irritated. In the print, she looks melancholic or perhaps ambivalent, which I believe offers greater interest.

Sotheby's Contemporary Art 5th October, by Happy Shopper on Oct 3, 2018 14:13:40 GMT 1, The balloon looks better with the shading and the wavy edges on the canvas giving it a 3D look. I don't think it's the quality of the shading that's in question. It's more that the personality is slightly lost in the girl's face and body language. She looks stiff and unfeeling.
Still a nice piece though!

I look at this print every day and have done for many years so its really nice to see the small differences between them.
