Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by shy on Jul 8, 2018 10:36:45 GMT 1, There's no excuse for domestic abuse or any abuse of another person. I also unfollowed him on instagram. There are plenty of quality artists out there that give back to the community, are respectful of others and would appreciate our patronage and support

Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by Deleted on Jul 8, 2018 10:46:25 GMT 1, I met Marq in 05 when one of my crew mates was staying with him for a few weeks to paint freeway spots when that was first starting to really blow up in LA. He is totally insane and unfiltered like a lot of the most genius creative minds were throughout history. Michelangelo, Pythagoras, Van Gogh, Beethoven, O'Keefe, Goya, Dali, and countless others were at least as crazy pre-internet. Today most artist have to run the sales customer service marketing business admin themselves through their websites and ig. Very few people have the personality type and emotional intelligence to balance unbound creativity and personal responsibility. The pressure compounds at his pay scale and work rate, triggering addiction and mental illness symptoms. It's charming how so many of you are quick to snap judge him personally, but wouldn't let that effect your reverence for him as an artist. I'm imagining how quick you would cue up for his autograph and to tell him how great you think he is. He'll be one that is appreciated 1000x more after he dies, which won't be long at this rate.
He’s a p*ick

And to clarify I own his work but detest the Man. He also gives it the big I am gangster on Instagram and then blocked me over a joke! Standard bully business, they always cry when the are on the end of it.

Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by moron on Jul 8, 2018 18:11:12 GMT 1, In the day and age of pr advisors and strategists there’s something quite refreshing about Retna’s pretty much guaranteed weekend instagram meltdowns. Looks like another one has just started. is it dues to cocaine abuse and other drugs, the side effect being agression and paranoia? Plus the agression and hitting a woman but there again a lot of peoples so called anti heros or heros tend to hit women or rape them etc
I don't know about comparing him to a troubled genius, his art comes nowhere near the art of Dali, Van Gogh etc. It looks like basic stuff anyone could do and sold as highbrow because the package describes Retna as some sort of creative genius which he isn't.

Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by Jared Aufrichtig on Jul 9, 2018 9:34:17 GMT 1, Not sure all you cats know what your talking about.... I've know him personally for over 10 years, he is a long time artist buddy.
Hope this clarifies a bit, he is never shy to defend himself (words or fists) so I'll do it for him
He is def dealing with some issues but everyone who blows up does, they are one of the true tests of success and mainstream exposure.
He's big time now!
People are literally waiting and hoping for his death and aiding his self distraction and demise!
Have a little compassion for another human being!!!!
He has blessed our lives with an amazing timeless style and ascetic.
Big up Mo! Much blessing and aloha

Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by Jared Aufrichtig on Jul 9, 2018 9:42:04 GMT 1, Well said sleazus1slord Mo is very unfiltered! I think deep down in his soul is the beauty, he wants to be kind but also comes from heavy beginnings! Most of the cats on this site are just blowing smoke and would never say anything to his face. Hope he is still with us for a while longer! Much blessing and aloha

Agreed!
By all accounts he will stop producing prints pretty soon and focus on commercial work and commissions....

Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by shy on Jul 10, 2018 9:01:22 GMT 1, Why has his art risen so much in recent years? Is it the galleries pushing it? I'm totally turned off it now that I have been enlightened regarding his antics. Definitely not adding any of his new work to my collection.

Because he is and incredibly talented painter with his originals being absolutely stunning in real life. His commercial partnerships with LV and Vista etc also help. I think his stock will continue to rise
Obviously he has his issues and I do not agree with all of his antics but he is an artist, let him be a bit crazy and raw. There is a reason the likes of LV and LA olympic committee work with him
I do not own any of his work but do love his talent.

Is it signed on the back? Smaller size than most of his canvas works but would say $20-$25k I would say.

Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by mose on Jul 10, 2018 18:29:57 GMT 1, It does amaze me how things go, and I've been reminiscing since someone posted a stellar Eelus shat-at canvas. Back in the early forums days, the work of Jose Parla blew me away. Retna, on the other hand, I strongly disliked (still do). Both were talked about in the same conversations, given the 'urban calligraphy' vibe through both. Retna seemed to run up and up, while Parla has stumbled with galleries and auctions (though, not with public installations. he has absolutely killed on that front).
Still have love for Parla's work, though a definite preference for 2005-2009 or so as opposed to current work.

Think you would struggle to find a Retna canvas for under $20k. This one hasn’t got the depth if some of his latest work but the black on white is his go to and looks amazing
