Anyone else getting bored by urban art?, by Dungle on May 11, 2016 7:17:02 GMT 1, There is a lot of derivative boring urban art done.
But there are also some great artists constantly changing their style and producing great work.
Just follow what you like rather than what is hyped on here.

Anyone else getting bored by urban art?, by wave on May 11, 2016 8:40:23 GMT 1, I think urban art is suffering now as there are so many tired old images that keep getting re-hashed as artists' fail to establish their own 'ownable' unique style (or tag) or original ideas. Some of the gallerys continually push tired images because 'they will sell'. There are those artists however who still continue to re-invent and amaze and continually carve out their own identity within the scene. Not afraid to make mistakes...i.e Insect, Bugs etc
Please not another one of these:
1. Marilyns 2. Splashing in paint 3. Umbrellas 4. Storm troopers. 5. Banksy pastiche. (Any of the above combined)

"There aren't boring things, only boring people" A quote from my old drama teacher when we criticised his lesson all those years ago, and his words have stuck with me. One of the few teachers at my school that didn't fiddle with the kids.

I like your list of urban art don't dos. I'm sure that could be worked into one of those mix and match flip books somehow.

Without traditional skill sets theyll struggle to adapt and move out of the general gimmick that got them recognized. There is some real talent in the genre and great work but a lot of fakes and rubbish
this emphasizes my point! wt!!! seen some of this jj adams work and its people like these jumping on the talentless bus that are making the genre just not cool anymore!

Anyone else getting bored by urban art?, by e3massive on May 11, 2016 13:34:19 GMT 1, I have come relatively late to urban art. Not lucky enough to pick up Banksy's for nothing and now sell them to pay to buy the next toy. I think you will always get people whose tastes change as with music, the car they drive and ultimately the bungalow they live in to save their knees! I do find myself getting bored on some artists already but overall think urban art is pretty cool. Just up two pence worth....

Anyone else getting bored by urban art?, by Street Art Fan on May 11, 2016 14:24:05 GMT 1, Not sure if it's dead, but it's become boring. The thrilling excitement that surrounded the scene just a few short years go (captured beautifully in the intro to Exit Through The Gift Shop) has morphed into a dull, repetitious waiting game for print releases and sanctioned murals whose only reason for being is to signal that a neighborhood is about to be gentrified. I realize that this is the way of all youth movements - they can't stay subversive forever. But still! I hoped that we could hold onto this wild, crazy, vital thing of ours just a little bit longer before it became so mainstream.

Anyone else getting bored by urban art?, by natstan on May 12, 2016 16:54:51 GMT 1, I happened onto an episode of 'show me the monet' - probably an old one - just last night, and that actually got me thinking about appreciating art on another level. Does the piece MOVE you? How is the execution of the piece intepreted uniquely and differently in the eyes of the artist? Does the piece has 'longevity'?
I don't really see that much in many of the artists discussed here, unfortunately. Many are just rehash of what someone more famous or successful has done before, or are just a repetition of works that will sell. There are some bright sparks though. Conor harrington and pejac (imo the banksy of environmental issues) come to mind.

Anyone else getting bored by urban art?, by Deleted on May 16, 2016 13:11:21 GMT 1, Not enough thinking outside the box.
Plus some of the art works great in certain locations. Os Gemos did the big mural in Italy, their Brazilian Homer Simpson (to me anyway) caracter hanging onto a train carriage was great. Yet their cartoon caracters in teh underground tunnels in Paris out of place and the tunnels would have been better with no art on them.
Maybe people are getting bored because it is not anarchist enough and panders to political correctness and advertising trendy green and other issues.
People are aware anyway without needing artists telling them how to think.

The number of great urban artists who are not discussed on UAA is astounding. It's the choice of what is debated/pushed/bought and sold on here that has become increasingly wearisome.

Anyone else getting bored by urban art?, by Warm Gun on May 22, 2016 18:26:01 GMT 1, I only get excited when Banksy does a show/something new. Everything else seems so dull in comparison. I can't remember the last time I saw a release form an artist in this scene and thought 'I must have that on my wall'.
Seeing this forum be ruined by greed hype and self interest hasn't helped either.

And the flip side of this thought is that quite a few artists discussed on UAA are definitely not urban artists. Other than that maybe the artists live in cities and have galleries in cities.
Tremendous stuff coming out of a variety of Mexican locations. Mexico City and Oaxaca to name just two.

Anyone else getting bored by urban art?, by dwight on May 22, 2016 21:41:21 GMT 1, Banksy and Bast still give me the same excitement I got 10+ years ago. Same. Same here...next time Banksy chooses to do a show or stunt, the interest will be as fervent as it ever was. Banksy is too expensive for me (in the sense that I now prefer to buy unique canvases or objects for $10k+ money)
Bast, Faile, and Paul Insect are still very cool to me and get me excited, but I'm only buying top quality unique or almost unique. I'm out on print releases.
I started buying Dave Kinsey prints for $50 and now all are worthless, but that's ok. The love of art and collecting that grew from those experiences has left me with an evolved collection and collecting strategy. I'll always treasure my Banksy, Bast, Faile prints, but now I buy higher quality unique canvases and objects with less frequency.
Current favorites (not really urban art): Daniel Turner, Jeff Zilm, John Houck, Ryan McLaughlin, Ryan Mrozowski, Jonas Wood, Daniel Arsham

Anyone else getting bored by urban art?, by Feral Things on May 22, 2016 21:43:28 GMT 1, Can you give some examples of great urban artists not discussed here, please? This could be a whole new thread: 'Artists You Might Know But Who Aren't Discussed Here' ย Here's a few of the artists I follow that fit the bill:
There are a lot of European and South American artists like Hyuro, Dave The Chimp and Horfee who seem to go largely unnoticed and even big names like Momo, Ericailcane, Tanc, Stohead and Mambo etc. are only occasionally mentioned.
Although the golden era of New York subway painting might be long in the past there's still plenty going on with the Godfathers of graffiti; there's a new documentary being released about T Kid 170, Lee Quiรฑones is still producing incredible work and Cornbread released some signed stickers last month.
Aside from eL Seed and maybe l'Atlas, there's not much mentioned of Arabic graffiti artists; I posted about a few in the Arabic Graffiti thread when I used to update it but a few of the many artists whose work I follow include Aya Tarek, Zepha and Majd Abdel Hamid.
There's a whole bunch of artist like Roadsworth, Filthy Luker and Jan Vormann who produce incredible street work but perhaps don't get mentioned as much here because their work doesn't easily translate to exhibitions and gallery work.
I'd also add Seacreative, Boswell, KR, Goodchild, Supakitch, Pantonio, Gris1, Candice Tripp, SatOne and many of the artists featured on Graffuturism.

Anyone else getting bored by urban art?, by pcant on May 23, 2016 4:06:29 GMT 1, I honestly get kinda burned out on the forum, the endless fighting about which artist is being hyped or is great or is being flipped or is garbage ("No it isn't!" "Yes it is!" etc...) or whatever. Too many threads descend into nastiness, in my humble. However, I still find great art on the streets, great art that makes me stop and go back for another look. "Urban" art is far too broad a topic to be boring overall, but if you don't like what's in the galleries, or on the massive sanctioned mural, then go down the alley next to the big sanctioned piece, or in another part of town, and I imagine you'll find great art that is still being made for art's sake, not for the hits, or the sales, or the masses. Always go down the alleys, instead of the boulevards, and you'll find the unknowns, the creators. Doesn't even mean that the murals can't be awesome or inspiring, but something about getting approval that takes the edge off it, makes it too shiny. Anyway, my two cents.

whatever happened to Hutch, SPQR, Copyright, Neverwork, and who was the guy that did the girl in welly boots with the unbrella? We could do a top 10 bubble to burst artists, that would cheer us up ;-) Copyright is still active. I really liked that Mantis piece with the mushroom cloud. Anyone else getting bored by urban art?, by Sanscript on May 23, 2016 11:29:33 GMT 1, Can you define "urban art" for me as it seems to be pretty big tent at this point. Indeed - what is Urban Art? For example, an artist may produce a piece a work that features that trusty fiend, a Storm Trooper, and then said artwork will be classified as Urban, but the Storm Trooper is a modern concept, so maybe the art is just 'Contemporary'. I think that a lot of contemporary art is labelled as Urban, which I suppose makes it cooler? Otherwise this forum could be called the 'Contemporary Art Association', which sounds no where near as exciting
