'The Queen Of Neon' - 5th Base Gallery, by Dan Kitchener on Apr 2, 2016 7:04:07 GMT 1, 'Silence' - Acrylic and spray paint on deep edged box canvas - Box framed - Currently on show 5th Base Gallery at my solo show 'Queen Of Neon' which runs until April 6th
This in one of my new works on canvas and a different series of works, taking the Geisha imagery with the traditional ideas of being brightly lit, bold, colourful and bright, and focusing more on the emotions and mood of the subject. With a look back to traditional oil painting, the subject emerges from the darkness, heavy shadows creating deep canyons of blackness, the folds of the Kimono, like mountain peaks. Abstract shapes picked out by the spot light reveal her face, the stillness and silence of the piece, she's lost in thought, the performance has ended, the lights have gone off, all is silent.

'The Queen Of Neon' - 5th Base Gallery, by Dan Kitchener on Apr 2, 2016 16:34:45 GMT 1, Thank you! It's now sold.
This painting is entitled 'Butterfly' and is a huge canvas, 72 x 48 inches.
In this work, I wanted to 'blur' the lines between the energetic movement and lights of my rainy city with the Geisha portraits and studies, to create something that enthuses this electric energy. I like the ideas that the Geisha is almost like a butterfly, emerging from the darkness, the folds of the kimono like the pupa, as the delicate beauty emerges from within. The paint drips, and the fluid nature of the colors add to a sense of movement and drama of the Geisha being revealed.

'The Queen Of Neon' - 5th Base Gallery, by Dan Kitchener on Apr 2, 2016 17:10:01 GMT 1, 'Light Dance' - Original acrylic and spray paint on canvas - 40 x 30 inches and currently on show at 5th Base Gallery 23 Heneage Street, Brick Lane as part of my 'Queen Of Neon' solo show - show runs until April 6th.
There is also a limited edition print available of this painting, signed and numbered and also a hand finished option available from the gallery.
This painting represents a transition between the energy and motion of my cityscapes, and rainy night scenes with the traditional Geisha style portraiture and imagery. I wanted to embody a sense of motion, and a snapshot of lights dancing, blurring, as though blinking and seeing a fleeting glimpse of this electric movement, these dancing shapes, contortions of light and colour, mixing together into a series of fluid, wave like shapes and brush strokes. The sense of dance and levity, a sense of electric energy and beauty. For me this painting bridges the gap between my works and ties together so many elements of light and colour, mood and atmosphere.

'Tokyo Rain' - Original acrylic and spray paint on canvas - 60 x 48 inches / currently on show at 5th Base Gallery at my 'Queen Of Neon' solo show, until April 6th
This painting shows an energetic and vibrant neon filled rainy night in Shinjuku, Tokyo. I wanted to capture the idea of a moment passing, perhaps walking on the streets, or in a taxi rushing passed the huge blocks of neon colour of the buildings around. The idea of painting the imperfect, the blurry, the out of focus, the distorted views of the city, momentary glimpses. I also wanted to really add a sense of wet paint, drips, colours running in the rain, the feeling of rain pouring over you, water getting into your eyes, making you squint, using the paint to evoke those feelings, rivers of colour, Liquid LIghts.....

'The Queen Of Neon' - 5th Base Gallery, by Dan Kitchener on Apr 4, 2016 6:05:05 GMT 1, 4 Geisha studies - 16 x 16 inches, Acrylic and spray paint on canvas - set of 4 / currently on show at 5th Base Gallery at my 'Queen Of Neon' solo show until April 6th
A series of studies depicting the beautiful form of the geisha cloaked in darkness. I wanted to paint images that hinted and suggested the form of the Geisha. Rather than the brightly spot lit, colourful and theatrical type images, I wanted to present her in a more subdued and atmospheric way. They focus on light and shadows, thin slithers of light pick out edges of the face and kimono, light dances from her hair ornaments, punctuating the darkness and giving form to the shapes as they emerge from the inky blackness. I love the way they emerge from the void.

'The Queen Of Neon' - 5th Base Gallery, by Dan Kitchener on Apr 5, 2016 6:50:39 GMT 1, Tokyo Lights' - 48 x 24 inches / Acrylic and spray paint - currently on show at 5th Base Gallery at my 'Queen Of Neon' solo show until April 6th
A rain soaked, neon filled Tokyo street scene. In this painting I wanted to emphasis the colours, the feeling of rain, the colours creating rivers of colour, blending and merging into one another. Multi coloured strips of colour, pour down the image, 'Liquid Lights', creating pools of coloured light. Silhouetted figures flit in and out of focus on the sizzling, electric filled wet streets, perhaps unaware of the spectacular surroundings they inhabit, beauty in the ordinary day, the mundane, looking at the city through new eyes, seeing the colour and vibrancy everywhere..

'Rivers Of Light' - 40 x 30 inches / Acrylic and spray paint / currently on show at 5th Base Gallery at my 'Queen Of Neon' solo show until April 6th
This painting is an exploration of my love of rainy Tokyo cityscapes, or 'Light'-scapes. Based on my trip in 2015 to Tokyo, it's a street scene in Shinjuku, inspired by my wanderings around the rainy streets late at night and early morning. Absorbing the energy and electricity of the city that night, I was confronted by so much beauty, rain pouring form the sky, creating pools of lights and electric colours, pools of iridescence and neon on the pavements. I actually laid on the pavement to get a view from the puddles upwards, to see how the city looked from this strange angle, starring up to the vertical colours as they stretched into the sky, glowing in the wet night air...
