Alec Monopoly πΊπΈ Graffiti β’ Street Art β’ Print Release, by Deux Spin on Mar 22, 2011 10:36:53 GMT 1, I thought I'd take a moment to introduce Alec Monopoly on here - I could find anything on him but he appears to be big in the States. I'm also a big fan of what he's doing!
Yesterday I bought "DJ Monopoly" from www.graffiklondon.co.uk - they had 4 of his pieces in the gallery, all of which were superbly finished and well thought out.
This piece is going in the same room as my Rubik_Dalai Lama
For more info on the artist, see a recent news article:

Alec Monopoly πΊπΈ Graffiti β’ Street Art β’ Print Release, by Deux Spin on Jun 1, 2011 12:37:18 GMT 1, I'm aware that some of you in the UK, including Silky are not yet familiar with Alec's work.
I put together a brief post on my blog with furthur information on him. Also take a look at the following gallery from his last event, which sold out completely by the end of the 2 week showing:
Photos: www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150173743781815.345558.139183871814
This legendary American street artist is recognised for his depiction of the beloved Monopoly board game mascot βRich Uncle Penny Bagsβ across billboards, street walls and other streetscapes in major cities including New York, Los Angeles and now London. While at first glance his work may fall into the βpop-artβ category, it contains a certain depth which represents the apocalyptic nature of corporations in modern day society. By using bold colours and expressive brush strokes he has brought new life to iconic characters such as Bob Dylan and Jack Nicholson and made their flamboyant personalities come alive. βAlecβ was inspired by Andy Warhol whose affinity for the Campbellβs Soup Can allowed him to express his views on modern society, using variations in the image as perceived metaphors of life.
Over the next 10 days you can expect a buzz around the streets of London in the lead up to Alecβs first solo exhibition overseas. Keep your eyes peeled for large painted works of the Monopoly Man and Jack Nicholson on the streets of West London and the City, particularly areas such as Notting Hill, Westbourne Grove and Liverpool Street. At the opening and party next Thursday 9th of June his works will go on sale for the first time in the UK, you can also expect an appearance by the legend himself, live painting in the garden, a team of mixologists serving cocktails and yours truly, DJ Deux Spin providing the soundtrack to this guaranteed sell-out evening!

Alec Monopoly πΊπΈ Graffiti β’ Street Art β’ Print Release, by Deux Spin on Jun 1, 2011 21:56:33 GMT 1, Although the Zeus piece is cool, 'Alec' is a completely different artist - he's been around for sometime but started his work using the Monopoly Man in 2008. From what I understand he sells very few prints, the majority of his work is original art on canvas.

Alec Monopoly πΊπΈ Graffiti β’ Street Art β’ Print Release, by melroseandfairfax on Jun 5, 2011 2:43:51 GMT 1, Alec has been killing the scene in Los Angeles the past few years.
He was in our group show, 'What Graffiti is to New York - Street Art is to Los Angeles' and his was the first piece to sell--to the first person who saw it before it was even hung. The collector also collects Banksy's, and got them before he got big.
It would be awesome to see Alec's solo show in London. Sure its going to be a hit. Big ups from LA!

I'm from L.A. and I don't know anyone who likes or cares for his work here either....no originality or skill at all.
The Streetopoly piece Zeus did awhile back is definitely much better, more unique, and not a case of pretentious hype.
For deuxspin to call him 'legendary' is absolutely lame. Nice try.

May the all mighty lord have mercy on this fool's soul.

Cheers Highinla! Truer words have never been said. L.A. has some amazing and original artists and 'Alec' is not one of them.
The show M&F was referring to recently was a absolute joke and the worst group show I have ever seen. Just a bunch of people posing as artists and trying to be cool. Trust me on this one fellow forum members...it's the absolute truth and was indeed a blemish on the L.A. Art Scene.

Alec Monopoly πΊπΈ Graffiti β’ Street Art β’ Print Release, by Deux Spin on Jun 7, 2011 7:30:43 GMT 1, Good see you speak your minds. I like Alec's work, its catchy and evokes thought. I know he has a following from people outside of the "street art" community - perhaps that is who he appeals to, but he's a young artist who has developed his style a lot over the last year and for that alone deserves support and all the best for his London show.

Alec Monopoly πΊπΈ Graffiti β’ Street Art β’ Print Release, by HHills on Jun 9, 2011 2:37:43 GMT 1, Big difference between a hater and someone who speaks unbiased truth. I just want to let the people know who live outside of L.A. that your hype is laughable and not to believe your in your big words and sales pitch, i.e. "L.E.G.E.N.D"...still laughing at that one.
It's also a joke that you had to try to validate yourself by saying that a buyer of Alec's work also has a Banksy. Please refrain from any comparison or relevance to Banksy, as it is a complete insult to him and any other talented and original artist out there in the Urban/Street/Contemporary Art Scene.
Cheers.

Alec Monopoly πΊπΈ Graffiti β’ Street Art β’ Print Release, by melroseandfairfax on Jun 9, 2011 10:50:39 GMT 1, ^ Good thing you don't speak for LA because Alec has many fans in the city. His street work has earned him that credibility, and the support, like this London solo show, speaks for itself.
Not sure what role you think M&F plays in a 'sales pitch'. We have nothing to do with the London show or the title L.E.G.E.N.D. but are simply showing support to a local artist who is taking off.
And next time we will refrain from mentioning someone like Alec's being in a collection with Banksy. It clearly rocks your world of what is and should be in the art world. Even though the collector was proud to share that they had been collecting Banksy for years and bought originals before he became a household name. They said that there would never be another Banksy (and we agree) but that they felt that buying Alec's piece on the front end of his career was a similar thing.
Shoot, haters always gonna hate. Its clear where dignan stands. And feel free to keep hating from the sidelines of your computer screen. Meanwhile, Alec and the rest keep climbing to the top.
Stay up, Alec. In our book you might not be a 'LEGEND' yet, but keep doing what you're doing and someday soon you will be~

I tried to comment that it was laughable that your sales pitch for the show was that your line up of artist were the best in the world, never made it on your blog though.

Alec Monopoly πΊπΈ Graffiti β’ Street Art β’ Print Release, by melroseandfairfax on Jun 9, 2011 19:20:44 GMT 1, ^ yep. We have been really open with how we treat comments and don't post the purely negative ones
Here is what we wrote about a post awhile back
melroseandfairfax.blogspot.com/2011/01/calm-through-storm-why-we-dont-post.html
We received a comment yesterday asking why we don't post the negative comments? The answer is very simple- why would we?
This blog is a celebration of street art in Los Angeles. We really try to be as supportive and enthusiastic about the scene as we can be. We shine a light on most, and are not out to get anyone.
What are the guidelines we go by? We welcome dissenting, alternative viewpoints. But we won't post pure dickishness. And to the handful of anonymous, half assed threats that we get, we really don't give a fuck about any of you or what you say. Talk is cheap. We are out on the streets every day.
There are always going to be strong feelings about street art. MELROSEandFAIRFAX is going to keep doing what we are doing, and keep staying positive. The success of this blog speaks for itself.
So all the fierce armchair warriors and computer screen soldiers can learn to cope with the way things are going to be, or just fuck off altogether.
And to the legions of fans who support this blog, we can only say "Thank You". We love you and appreciate all the fellow lovers of Los Angeles' street art. It must be said, we get 30 positive comments to every negative one (but sometimes the haters get angry!) Anyway, we felt that this bit must be said.

I prefer not to crap on this thread because I actually like Alec as a person, he's a nice guy and I wish him the best.
MELROSE AND FAIRFAX however, is deadweight in this community. He has no credibility and everything he will attach his name to will turn to S#i+
Alec and Deuxspin, please keep this guy away from everything you do (including threads you start), its not a good look for your carrier and will not bring you the discussion and/or buzz you are looking for.
melroseandfairfax will block any comment that is directed toward artist they deal with. You guys blog about the same handful of people every single day, any sticker put out gets a mention. I tried to comment that it was laughable that your sales pitch for the show was that your line up of artist were the best in the world, never made it on your blog though. I prefer not to crap on this thread because I actually like Alec as a person, he's a nice guy and I wish him the best. MELROSE AND FAIRFAX however, is deadweight in this community.
