Sweet Toof, by Feral Things on Mar 11, 2016 19:03:54 GMT 1, Sorry, I've only just caught up on this thread and seen your post.ย Vanitas was a style of painting popular in Belgium and the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century.ย The paintings was all about our own morality and that what really matters is the eternal ever-after and not the earthly pursuits and desires into which we put all our energies.ย The still-life below by Harmen van Steenwyck is probably my favourite painting in the National Gallery and is a fantastic example of what vanitas paintings were all about.
The pocket watch symbolises that our time on earth is finite and is running out, while the skull and the extinguished candle are central reminders of our own mortality.ย Shells were a collector's item for the rich and this empty shell is both a reminder of the hollowness of wealth and that we can't take our money with us after we die. The samurai sword is a symbol of power and that irrespective of how powerful you may become we can never defeat death.ย The books symbolise the pursuit of knowledge and the two musical instruments symbolise love of the arts (erm, I think this one's about us lot) and they're a reminder that death puts to an end all of that.ย The flute is a phallic symbol and is about as racy as those crazy Calvanists got.
Where you can now see an urn on the right hand side, Van Steenwyck originally painted the bust of a Roman emperor whose empire has long since disappeared; the serendipitous master stroke of the painting is that if you look carefully you can still see the ghostly face of the emperor.

These look brilliant. The contrast from the linen works really well. Congrats

His woodcuts are great quality and top value for money. Editions of 10 for 80 quid, seriously compare that to most current releases...

Sweet Toof, by Deleted on Mar 16, 2016 1:09:39 GMT 1, Sorry, I've only just caught up on this thread My fave Vanitas ... the thing that grabs me particularly in here is the small oval portrait, which is a painting of the artist as his current self (in quite old age), which is held by his younger self. And the great feel & painting, of course David Bailly Self-Portrait with Vanitas Symbols 1651 Oil on wood I like Vanitas, and Holbein did some great versions.
One of my favourite artists is James Ensor.
and Mexican art and skull imagery.

Sweet Toof, by Deleted on Mar 16, 2016 10:48:03 GMT 1, Still available, is the love for Sweet Toof gone? The prints have always taken a while to sell on his bigcartel. I like Sweet Toof's prints better than anything else that he sells ... etchings, woodcuts, linos, I love them. Obviously with an edition, there is 10 or 20 to sell, rather than just the one original, and I get the feeling that, with all the one-offs he's been making available recently, people are grabbing those rather than the editions. As well as the ones at the top of the page currently, I believe that he still has some of the large "tunnel vision" woodcuts, although they've been marked 'coming soon' for some time now, having been for sale earlier. I have one of the black & white ones of those framed in the bedroom, and it looks fab, all wood-grainy & inky. If you want one of those, you'll probably have to contact him via instagram I like the 'artist's palette' cut, and may well press the button when drunk soon I like his originals and his prints. His paintings and stuff on the street.

I have a piece that arrived damaged, got in touch but never heard back either.
No a big deal, but would be good to hear back after several weeks
