Your Biggest Bargain, by Hairbland on Apr 27, 2015 15:59:45 GMT 1, Best score for me was picking up an O Winston Link silver gelatin print of one of his iconic images, "Sometimes Electricity Fails" at the Brooklyn Flea in its early days, maybe 7 years ago. A dealer was selling some art photos from a private corporate hotel collection that they had picked up - I recognized his work, they were selling it for $80 because it wasn't signed and I thought my 3 year old son who was newly into trains would dig one by the master on his wall. If you don't know him, his work is in MOMA amongst many other museums.
So one night about 3 years ago, son at this point couldn't care about trains...I'm on computer, smoked a bit...and looked up O Winston Link. Turns out he signs on back. So I take apart frame, look at back...signed and dated by Link, also his studio stamp and notes from his eventually crazy wife. Current prices for this are $9,000+, but then I heard from his son (!) that he only did a few signed like this one and maybe worth $12,000.
I expect to sell sometime soon, possibly this year. It has funded most of my urban art collection.

Your Biggest Bargain, by Trevorm on Apr 27, 2015 16:20:14 GMT 1, A 'damaged' Stop and Search cost me ยฃ700.00 about 4 years ago - you'd struggle to see the marks where the glass was broken while the framed piece was being courier'd
Best one is a large framed Keith Haring poster I picked up from a guy in Belgium for ยฃ300.00 complete with big sig and doodle. It's subsequently been acknowledged as being 'right'

Your Biggest Bargain, by fattyramone on Apr 27, 2015 18:00:44 GMT 1, I guess mine must have been at last years Folkestone art car boot sale and winning 2nd prize at the Tracey Emin raffle for her as then unreleased embroidery "Lilac Legs" ...number 3......edition of 50
It came already framed with UV glass and cost all of ยฃ5 , although I bought 20 quids worth.....only one ticket away from winning first prize too!
Lovely lady , she had plenty of time to chat with everyone.

Your Biggest Bargain, by Lroy on Apr 27, 2015 18:18:13 GMT 1, This thread is a bit weird. Art is important, not money. And if I found a Van Gigh in a dustbin, we should applause ? We speak about value and money here. We could make another thread :your most expensive artwork that you bought ?!

Your Biggest Bargain, by fattyramone on Apr 27, 2015 18:51:56 GMT 1, Christ , it gets tedious when people splurt out the age old "money's not important, it's all about the art , yah" gumpf then in their next breath start a "for sale" thread along the likes of "Banksy , for sale , signed , mint , ยฃ25,000 no offers"
I'm not haveing a go at you personally mate , I don't know you from Adam. But honestly bud , bugger it's boring and very pretentious too.

I disagree for a number of reasons. Art and money have always been intertwined other than maybe the earliest cave drawings and those were probably just to impress the chicks. Much of the great art from 1500-1850 required patrons...why do you think so many paintings of the wealthy hang in museums?
But that is an overall comment on art. A forum allows for the creation of many threads, and this one specifically is on what kind of lucky find someone has had. Unless one is wealthy as humans we will always be intrigued by a treasure hunt and a lucky break. And many here are in search of that great new artist before anyone else.
There are enough other threads on this forum , this is a fun one that could easily be held in a bar / pub over beers.
All of my art purchases have gone up, some dramatically, except Charming Baker. Doesn't mean anything, but it makes me feel better than if they all went down!

Anyway, you find this thread very fun and instructive. Yes , but in the examples of " good deals " - are we on an EBay forum ? - , I did not read extraordinary " affairs and surprising " bargains ". Not " great or classical street-art names... If you want to really wants bargain, just put bids on eBay in July/August or in January after the feasts ( it's a nightmare for sellers ). Yes I got great bargains too but whithut to seem " pretentiousness ( as the other member talked from me ) and showing as a kid my " good deals " ? Per example two years ago, I got a collage of Cartrain with Pistols Meaning for only 18ยฃ , I got an alien kit if Ibvader ( the Paris green one, not a fake , I asked to Invader ) for only 300 euros, I got signed Invader books or catalogue for only 50 euros, Aryz print from POW, for only 80 euros, Paris Hilton re-release for only 25 quids - now its value is 180 ยฃ - , some Eine for less than 80 quids , a book of Dran bought 1,50 euros ( just sold for 75 ). , a Lichtenstein signature for one pound, etc etc..! Well, do you think now that my post is interesting ? :-) am happy yes, but I don't care a bit of these " good deals ".., if it was a print of Banksy I would say yes. :-)

Your Biggest Bargain, by fattyramone on Apr 27, 2015 21:25:10 GMT 1, As "hairbland" put so well , all this thread was for was for us to have a little natter and across-the-fence gossip about unexpected moments that Lady Luck shines her light upon us , a bit of light hearted fun that's all.
Given the subject matter it was hardly going to make a riveting read if we all posted about the times we've picked up a ยฃ20 print for a barguin price of ยฃ8.50 from a man in Stratford upon Avon..
Anyway , enough of that , I'm looking forward to your future "for sale" threads where you wear your heart on your sleeve , nail your sails to the mast and sell us everything you don't want for it's cost price and not sully your soul with the evil of profit.
Viva le revolution comrade.

Your Biggest Bargain, by Lroy on Apr 28, 2015 13:24:14 GMT 1, Yes, maybe, bargains... I had so great pieces for free.. Just by friendship, but I can't tell who or what... Without to seem pretentiousness.. I ask again my question: is price or bargains the real matter for collectors ? I really really don't think so. That's said. We are not in Tesco, heroes or in a supermarket.

My fave freebie has to be my STIK doodle on spray painted card and I won't mention my Banksy BME at cost back in 2005!

(I couldn't resist to comment!)
