Originators and Pioneers, by Feral Things on Mar 17, 2015 21:48:01 GMT 1, There's a great looking exhibition on at la Pinacothรจque de Paris entitled 'Pressionism: the Masterpieces of Graffiti on Canvas from Basquiat to Bando'. The show features nearly a hundred canvases by the pioneers of graffiti painted between 1970 and the 1990s. It's a really impressive line up including Rammellzee, Mode2, T-Kid170, Futura, Lady Pink, Phase 2, Basquiat, Dondi, Taki183, Haring, JonOne, Lee Quiรฑones, Crash and Seen. The exhibition opened this weekend and runs through until 13 September 2015:

Originators and Pioneers, by Feral Things on Mar 26, 2015 22:01:57 GMT 1, Lee Quiรฑones features on 'A Latino History of Hip-Hop' which has just gone out on US radio and which you can listen to here. The whole radio documentary is worth a listen but if you've only got 15 minutes then the section on Lee and graffiti starts about 45 minutes in. Here's some photos from his website of the Howard The Duck handball wall and one of his 125 whole-cars to ogle while you listen:
Also, Cornbread has some originals on maps of his hometown of Philadelphia available on his website:
And here's an introduction for the uninitiated:

Originators and Pioneers, by Feral Things on Oct 5, 2016 19:34:04 GMT 1, There's an excellent documentary called 'Rubble Kings' currently available on the BBC iPlayer (if you're not in the UK you can rent if on Vimeo here). The film documents the 1960s and 1970s gang culture of the Bronx and how hip hop evolved out of that environment, or at least the three elements of hop hop other than graffiti. The documentary includes lots of first hand interviews including with Afrika Bambaataa and DJ Kool Herc, as well as many of the gang members themselves. The documentary is available here and there's a trailer below:
