When Did You Start Collecting and What Was Your First Piece, by Schrรถdinger's Chat on Jan 20, 2015 22:04:34 GMT 1, This was the first piece I bought, it is by Mr Eggs from Manchester, bought in about 2002 from memory:
Was already well into Graf and lived with a couple of local street artists in Brighton, hung around Tarner Land & Black Rock (if you know Brighton).
Always loved seeing Banksys works around Bristol (mild mild west onward), Brighton, East London (loads in the Bethnal green / Shoreditch area) in the early 2000's, bought the little self published black books when they were released, went to the Turf War show in 2003, but never even considered buying a Banksy Print.
The closest I came was somewhere around 2000 - 2002 when I saw a full sheet of Banksy tenners in a perspex frame for ยฃ150 on ebay, but decided it was too steep at the time (skint student).
Unfortunately Mr Eggs work has not appreciated at the same rate as Banksy's.
There's still time...

First print I bought when I discovered more street artists in 2008 and that was a dolk prisoner.

When Did You Start Collecting and What Was Your First Piece, by Deleted on Jan 21, 2015 8:42:46 GMT 1, This was my first piece: I remember looking at all the Banksy canvases and thinking should I buy a load or not. I decided not to as they seemed so expensive! Grail.... Great framing; think that traditional Romantic style works super-well with a lot of simple street art. Congrats on getting that while the getting was good!

When Did You Start Collecting and What Was Your First Piece, by daveart on Jan 21, 2015 15:20:54 GMT 1, I could probably say my first piece i purchased in 1984. My goal in life at the time was to be a photographer and I used some hard earned funds to buy a framed Ansel Adams poster. Hung it in my room all through college - and my first few classes and photography jobs went pretty well ... and then ... i found computers... and that was that. I still dabble in photography and still have the Adams Poster. although now i dream of buying a signed original Ansel Adams.. but those are pretty spendy at this point.

David Cool, photography would be my other area of interest. Started there with a Eadweard Muybridge collotype with his study of a man on a donkey. The exposure and tonal range of Adam's work are incredible. Would be awesome to get any of the Group f/64 photos.

When Did You Start Collecting and What Was Your First Piece, by Happy Shopper on Jan 21, 2015 18:22:41 GMT 1, I started by collecting posters, mostly old films, but I think my first Urban Art print was Faile, Forbidden Love. From Santa's Ghetto in 2005 on Berwick Street. (Still kicking myself for not buying up the Banksy prints)

Spoke to a friend about how good it was and she bought me 'Golf Sale' having heard about POW on GLR ( Greater London Radio ) Santa's Ghetto's were the highlight of these early years.

When Did You Start Collecting and What Was Your First Piece, by Deleted on Jan 23, 2015 0:26:37 GMT 1, I was very lucky. I was working in a skate shop in SF in the late 90's when a guy walked in wearing a subware Nesm sweatshirt. I loved it, asked about it, he told me Recon was about to open, so I went by. Was offered a job, which I took and was exposed to the culture. There was a gallery in the basement which showed Futura, stash, kostas, lee q, espo, Mars, etc etc.. Lots of artists, and musicians passed through during my years there.
My first piece was a doze green poster his brother juice gave me, I had a couple kaws skate decks and I think I had a fun Misk print as well back then. I was collecting lots of books, and am lucky there too. Stash gave me a zephyr signed dondi book, I have signed Futura books, mags etc.
my first painting was a Mars-1 original from a show I curated in 2004 in Toronto.
I've been hooked into urban art since.

When Did You Start Collecting and What Was Your First Piece, by smokey on Jan 23, 2015 14:36:55 GMT 1, Been collecting in one form or another for a while. Whether catalogs & hard to find bios on Dada artists to the random canvas by friends. First purchase from an established artist was Weekend Warrior by the lowbrow artist Anthony Ausgang. Painting on found thriftstore find. Always loved his psych album covers for Spectrum to MGMT. Wife's not a fan but been holding onto it as long as possible. May have to go at some point unless I can get my daughter on my side.

When Did You Start Collecting and What Was Your First Piece, by Someones Brain on Jan 28, 2015 14:55:51 GMT 1, For me, it began with music. Music scene brought me to collecting screenprinted gigposters (e.g by Kozik, Derek Hess, Ames Brothers, Emek, Jay Ryan ...) starting in the late 90s. I still have about 300 gigposters. From gigposters it went to art prints by "gigposter" artists, from there it was another step to street art and grafitti. What was nice to see (at least for me with that development) is that more and more street/urban artists start/started to do gigposters from time to time. So here I am, trying to keep my money together for more important things like a house or vacations. Not the first gigposters I bought but you get the idea. Don't judge my taste in music. In this respect I'm a child of the early 90's Seattle scene, and I stand tall.

When Did You Start Collecting and What Was Your First Piece, by met on Feb 1, 2015 9:13:31 GMT 1, I bought a Tiffanys for Breakfast by Eelus about a month after initial release. Still love it very much. Would you by chance understand the title for the piece, Tiffany for Breakfast?
I don't quite get it myself. No explanation I've come up with actually works. At least not without being forced and unsatisfactory, bearing in mind the book and film storyline and the name of the character played by Hepburn.

One of my favourite canvases is the one he did for the Cowboys to raffle. Wonder where it resides these days? Think Laz bought it back from the woman who won the raffle a couple of years later. Private collection these days I guess?

That's the reference. It's an iconic shot that an artist appropriated/made his own.

I think what met is getting at is that the character played by Hepburn is named Holly, not Tiffany.
The title of the artwork - and, by extension, the artwork itself - therefore comes across as nonsensical and lazy.

I wouldn't call it lazy. It hits you right in the nose, but sometimes the easy route is the best.

This I think. Purchased in 2005 from Beat13 in the Custard Factory, Birmingham. Used to be run / owned by lucy mclauchlan. Chock full of Banksy bits & pieces. Had a full size cut out Fying Copper in there as I recall. You know if you could do things again........
