What is the best way of protecting yourself when spending thousands on a single print.  When you buy a Banksy print is getting a coa from pest control enough?

i know if you send the money via paypal you have a level of protection

im just a bit nervous about spending thousands of pounds on one print

Very good question..

'Protection' is what you get if you go down the auction house route and or that of a gallery... It could be argued. Having picked up a couple of bits and bobs over the years it was always a fear that I'd stumble upon some dodgy seller of ill repute , and yes it did happen , once..

Thinking about it must be even worse if you can't do the face to face , ie you're far away.

Trust needs to be a large part of the transaction , do your due diligence ! check out the seller and ask for a few references , people don't mind speaking the truth in the event of a ref check.

Take your time and if you get a bad vibe you're going to have to bite the bullet and walk away. It happens to us all , don't let your heid get in the way , it could be costly and messy if it doesn't ring the right bells for whatever reason.

Face to face always the way, check it out when you get there and go with your gut, and do your research, best of luck

It's just as easy to fake a COA as it is to fake a print, so i'd advise checking with PC who the registered owner of the print is, and cross checking this with your seller! In order for pest control to release this info they'll want photo's of print numbering and coa so get your seller to send these over before the exchange date.

.Thanks for the advice guys. Especially nickh87. It would be great is PC could confirm how the current owner is. The seller has said they are the original buyer direct from pow as well.

Unfortunately the seller is over seas, so not possible to see the print In person before hand.

With regards to paypal. I've only ever claimed for under £50. I guess it's the same process for a large amount? If the print turns out to be fake, then I have a straight claim through paypal don't i?

Being overseas you're obviously relying on photos. Can you tell what images you've had?

PC should be able to confirm the current owner, especially if they've issued a COA.

I don't mean to sound rude. But I'd rather not say which image it is, until I know that I'm definitely going to go for it or not. It's just I don't want or jinx it.

The seller does has a coa from PC. so I'll ask if they can let me confirm with PC before I make an offer

And if the seller hesitates at that request from you, that's your tell. Get out! An honest seller will give you any photos you need in order to feel secure.

if you can't view it in person, maybe get in contact with another forum member who lives near the seller, and see if they can check it out for you?  I'm currently in the process of doing a deal this way and it's going great - one of the benefits of being on this worldwide forum

Unless its very rare or special piece I would wait until one comes up that's able to be inspected in person.
