If you spot a Faile freebie in Basel in Miami '12 / Preview: Joshua Liner Gallery @ PULSE ... let me know?
I'd love a little something after missing all the recent releases!

Thanks for the link Shoot.
Following on from this article, who do you think are the top ten street/urban artists who will stand the test of time? (i.e. In fifty years time they will still be valued and attributed with defining an era / genre.)
My list, in no particular order:
1. Jean-Michel Basquiat 2. Banksy 3. Jose Parla 4. Os Gemeos 5. Shepard Fairey 6. Taki 183 7. Invader 8. DONDI 9. Faile 10. Conor Harrington?
Everyone else will just slip into obscurity of the forums' vaults.

So hard....
so out goes Faile...
in comes Haring...
1. Jean-Michel Basquiat 2. Banksy 3. Jose Parla 4. Os Gemeos 5. Shepard Fairey 6. Taki 183 7. Invader 8. DONDI 9. Keith Haring 10. Conor Harrington?
Harrington is my wild card.
For me, although good artists, KAWS /McGee will be like the "Ernie Trova" of our times.

Taki 183 and DONDI are very graffiti specific (to be fair I even had to google Dondi's name as I am very ignorant about the graffiti scene), will they hit Art History ? from my humble point of view I would expect artists to be recognized in the future by a wide audience. I would say it is a bit early to say for Parla, Os Gemeos, Harrington. JR should probably be in that top 10. And there are quite many cards to play. Not willing to be outrageously pro-french but I would add Ernest Pignon-Ernest and C215 as other possible cards :-p
No mention of Mr Brainwash ? lol

Visit MIAMI ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by mmmike on Dec 12, 2012 16:01:35 GMT 1, I'd say 10 is very ambitious. I don't think that many will survive long term.
I'd say Haring Basquiat Banksy (60% chance)
and maybe one or two others. I think Ernest Pignon-Ernest will always have a place in history but I'm not sure he will be thought of in the same league. Which is unfortunate IMO.
Fairey (30%) Kaws (20%) Mcgee (10%) JR (5%) Os Gemeos (5%)
But that doesn't mean there aren't a pile of artists doing amazing work who in my mind are just as impressive or more so.

Visit MIAMI ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by daveart on Dec 12, 2012 20:17:22 GMT 1, tricky including Haring and Basquiat in there. as much as Banksy is hot now.. wait another 20 years and if he is at Basquiat / Haring levels you should be betting the farm on canvases trading hands at a paltry 100K. (any currency) Basquiat and Haring have sold originals 20times that value .. Banksy hardly even rates in my opinion... impact and value wise.. museums, shows, etc - also hard to compare in that both died so young along with Warhol that their markets and impact didnt fully have time to evolve.
anyway to the list. kaws .. sorry - YAWN. JR - photographer? hmm. maybe. not many photographers reach these heights cant see bumping FAILE out for either of these two to be in.
annnddd... flame away...

To be fair, Basquiat has traded hands at 260 (as opposed to 20) times that $100k price point and his market dwarves everyone else combined. I don't believe Haring has ever seen $3 million let alone nearly $30 million. Those are different leagues price wise though history may well even that out.
Street art has been auctionable now for decades dating back to the new realists (Hains, Villegle) and their italian friend, Rotella. I believe Rotella would be third on that list price wise but could well be mistaken. Apart from his talent, Banksy has the rare quality for being exceptionally well known the world over during his lifetime which always helps though I'm admittedly biased on that one. Still, precious few names will stand the test of time.
I'd be surprised if history remembered more than a handful of them all in 100 years time and will leave that decision to the great great grand children.

I think we need to draw a line between the already well established pop artists .. and the current crop of artists.
i didnt overstate how un inspired i am by kaws. ha.
for what its worth .. christies shows a 2007 KH sale of $2,840,000 and another in the 2million range. hard to imagine what private sales for some pieces might have been. if its pop art - warhol, Indiana, etc. if its street art ? hmmm.. basquiats most expensive pieces were hardly plucked from the subway were they ? a new category for pop or graffiti gallery artists that started in the street ?

Hey daveart,
I totally understand where you are coming from...
The simplistic (some might say overly simplistic!) way I look at the situation is as follows:
The art market health is generally judged by the results at auction not private sales. Artists' success, value and impact factor are generally judged on performance at auction over time.
Pretty much all "successful" auction street artists have made their way into the galleries. You are right JMB's most expensive pieces have not been plucked from the street, but then neither have KH or Banksy's.
Fundamentally the artists I included all started out on the streets...so satisfy the entry criteria for the street/urban artist genre.
Do you mind if we leave out pop artists for this list?...I think it over complicates things for my little brain!...However, you do have a point many street artists these days seem to be sons of Warhol!
